QantasLink is steadily expanding the route network served by its fleet of Airbus A220s, with the type now going international.

The Australian flag-carrier’s regional arm’s A220-300s can fly between any two points within Australia and now operate between 10 destinations in-country, but February saw the small narrowbody jet clocking up its first overseas sector, from Brisbane to Wellington, New Zealand.

More international routes are planned to start shortly, but destinations have not yet been announced by the carrier.

The A220-300, which QantasLink operates in a two-class, 137-seat configuration (10 business class and 127 economy), will fly up to three times weekly between Brisbane and Wellington.

QantasLink recently received its 11th A220-300, with four more expected to join the fleet by the middle of the year.

“Feedback from customers about the A220 has been fantastic, and we’re really excited for the aircraft to take off on its first scheduled international route,” QantasLink CEO Mark Dal Pra said at the launch of the Wellington service.

“Brisbane is an important market for us, and the A220’s size and economics make them a great fit for many of our trans-Tasman and Pacific routes.”

QantasLink has further expanded its footprint in Brisbane with flights to Honiara, in the Solomon Islands, set to increase from four times to five times weekly from March 29.

Operated in partnership with Alliance Airlines by an Embraer 190 with 10 business and 84 economy seats, the service reinforces Qantas’ investment in the Queensland capital.
