FARNBOROUGH, England—Rolls-Royce has secured its first Trent 1000 XE sale of this year’s Farnborough Airshow after being selected by Somon Air to power the Tajik airline’s future Boeing 787s.
The airline committed to four 787-9s last November in Washington but the aircraft are yet to hit the Boeing backlog. Rolls-Royce said Somon Air would buy four engines to power two 787s.
The July 21 order marks the engine-maker’s second Trent 1000 commitment of the year, after winning back LATAM Airlines in April. Ewen McDonald, Rolls-Royce’s chief customer officer, described Somon Air’s commitment as a “further vote of confidence from the market in the Trent 1000 XE, which, enabled by our ongoing transformation, has enhancements that offer up to triple time on wing, reduced maintenance and greater certainty in fleet planning.”
The centerpiece of the XE upgrade is an upgraded high-pressure turbine. Rolls-Royce said it is improving the time-on-wing performance across the Trent family.
