Spanish regional carrier Binter Canarias has added a further two Embraer E195 E2s as it continues to expand its fleet, as well as beginning an upgrade of its maintenance facilities.
The airline is based in the Canary Islands, Spanish possessions off the northwest coast of Africa, and links points within the archipelago as well as providing essential links to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean.
With the arrival of the latest two aircraft, Binter now has a 40-strong fleet, comprising 28 ATR turboprops and 12 Embraers. A further four E195 E2s are to be delivered. Binter ordered the batch of six E195 E2s in a $467 million deal at last year’s Paris Air Show and operates the type in a single-class, 132-seat layout.
The arrival of the latest aircraft will allow Binter to strengthen the connectivity of the Canary Islands, adding frequencies to existing connections as well as adding new destinations to the current 28 with direct flights from the island group. The carrier flies to around 20 international destinations in Europe – primarily Spain – and in mainland Africa.
Meanwhile, Binter has completed the renovation of offices on the top floor of the Binter Technic hangar at Gran Canaria Airport, the first of several investments that the company plans for its maintenance area, where more than 450 people from throughout the Group currently work.
Binter president Rodolfo Núñez said the company plans to move forward with a significant expansion of maintenance facilities: "We are going to build a new hangar with capacity for three maintenance lines for larger aircraft, such as Embraers and other types. A project with great potential to create highly qualified jobs, which would allow us to cover our growing needs and, in addition, offer basic maintenance services to other companies in the Canary Islands.”
