Chinese cargo carrier SF Airlines and ST Engineering opened their ST Engineering Aerospace (Hubei) Aviation Services joint venture at Ezhou Huahu International Airport in August 2025. The facility provides MRO services to the airline as well as third-party customers. A second hangar is under construction and is expected to open in the second half of 2027.

SIA Engineering Co. opened its Base Maintenance Malaysia facility at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, joining a similar facility in the Philippines as part of its regional base maintenance network in Asia. The 55,000-m2 facility, which opened in late 2025, comprises two hangars capable of supporting six widebodies concurrently.

China Eastern Airlines will soon open a 110,000-m2 complex that includes three hangars and supporting buildings at Shanghai Pudong. The carrier also acquired ST Engineering’s 49% stake in Shanghai Technologies Aerospace Co., the companies’ airframe MRO joint venture that operates from Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports, in December 2025.

HAECO plans to open two new facilities in Xiamen, China, in the fourth quarter. The first will be the world’s largest single-span aircraft maintenance hangar, HAECO says. Located at Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport, the 292,300-m2 hangar will have 12 widebody and six narrowbody maintenance bays as well as two separate painting bays.

Lufthansa Technik Philippines broke ground Aug. 6 for its second widebody aircraft MRO location in the country to accommodate growing demand for heavy checks in the region and beyond. The new 157,000-m2  facility at Clark International Airport will complement its existing 226,000-m2 facility in Manila at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which is less than 100 km (62 mi.) away. The Clark site is scheduled to begin operating in 2028.

HAECO, Toyota Tsusho, Japan Airlines and Vietnam’s Sun Group have agreed to establish a joint venture to develop an MRO facility at Van Don International Airport in northern Vietnam. Targeted to start operating in 2028, the $360 million project will span 170,000 m2 and is set to become one of the country’s largest aviation maintenance facilities. The cornerstone is a four-bay widebody hangar that includes flexibility for narrowbody maintenance in the midbays.

The in-service fleet of commercial aircraft in the Asia-Pacific region as well as China and India is expected to grow to about 15,900 aircraft, an increase of nearly 50%, over the next decade, according to Aviation Week’s 2026 Fleet & MRO Forecast. Narrowbodies continue to dominate orders: Single-aisle aircraft are projected to constitute more than 70% of the region’s fleet by 2035.

To accommodate that growth amid a shortage of widebody base maintenance capacity around the world, MRO providers and airlines in the region are expanding their aftermarket footprint.

Here are some of the recent aircraft and component MRO facility expansions.
