Lufthansa Technik Philippines plans to build a new widebody base maintenance facility at Clark International Airport, with operations set to commence in 2028.
The joint venture between the German MRO giant and the MacroAsia Corporation plans to grow its footprint at Clark, located about 50 miles northwest of Manila. Once completed in 2028, the facility will add around 1.6 million ft.2 and provide Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LHT) with capacity for up to nine widebody aircraft.
LHT said the investment will be in the “three-digit million dollar” range and will create around 1,200 skilled roles. The agreement coincides with a state visit by German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the Philippines capital on June 16 while also visiting the LHT Philippines operation to highlight German-Philippines economic cooperation.
At the announcement of the hangar construction, Soeren Stark, CEO of Lufthansa Technik, said: “Asia-Pacific is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world, and the Philippines is central to our strategy in this region. With the investment in the new site at Clark, we are taking the next decisive step in our growth strategy and positioning Lufthansa Technik for the future of aviation—well beyond the borders of this region.”
The company’s hangar at Clark will be its second base maintenance location in the Philippines. LHT Philippines has operated at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila for more than 25 years and has recently secured a long-term lease extension at the site.
LHT Philippines services Airbus A320, A330, A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft, with the site acknowledged as a widebody center of excellence in the maintenance specialist’s global network. With the additional Clark facility, the company’s portfolio will also eventually include maintenance services for Boeing 787 aircraft.
The MRO provider has previously acknowledged capacity constraints in heavily congested Manila, stating its intention to look beyond the city to further grow its Asia-Pacific operations. Clark was pinpointed as one of the potential expansion sites back in 2022, with LHT stating it benefits from being close to Manila and being well-connected logistically.
