Capacity & Competence: MTU's Next-Generation Engine MRO In North America
MTU Maintenance is a hub for change and growth. In the past year and a half, the world leader in customized maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for air-craft engines has announced a string of network developments that leaves few doubt-ing about its future trajectory.
None will make a bigger impact in the mid-term than the ramp-up of MTU Maintenance Fort Worth as a disassembly, assembly and test (DAT) shop for LEAP and GEnx engines. Since the 2025 announcement that it was licensed as a Premier MRO facility for LEAP-1A and -1B engines – one of only six MRO shops worldwide – the network has been funneling its vast know-how into the preparation of the first engine induction in July 2026.
The Premier MRO license allows the Texas location to offer comprehensive mainte-nance services, including full overhauls as well as in-house repair capabilities. The license also gives MTU access to the highest level of both technical and training support from the engine OEM CFM International. MTU expects the global LEAP market to be three times as big as the CFM56 market, eventually piquing at some 8,000 shop visits a year by 2045. MTU looks to capitalize on those impressive numbers, and fur-ther strengthen its independent market position to deliver engine operators the best MRO solutions.
In addition to the LEAP license, the site next to Fort Worth Alliance Airport also ac-quired a GBSA license from GE Aerospace for the GEnx-1B. For now, MTU’s MRO services for that engine model have been limited to the its turbine center frame at its Hannover location. These additions further broaden the service provider’s MRO capa-bilities in North America, adding to MTU Maintenance Canada’s portfolio of CF6-80C2 and V2500 in Vancouver.
However, setting up the infrastructure for new generation engine programs is only half the battle. MTU Maintenance is investing heavily into the education and up-skilling of new and current engine experts to provide the best conditions for ultimate success in their MRO trade craft. Alongside the DAT expansion in Fort Worth, the location has also launched a new training center, where MTU’s local specialists have been elevating their skills beyond existing on-site workscopes, and where those outside aviation are able to receive the best possible education for a growing industry. By combining hands-on learning, structured onboarding and close knowledge transfer across loca-tions, training is embedded as a strategic enabler of growth, long-term workforce de-velopment and consistent quality standards worldwide.
The evolution of MTU’s operations in Fort Worth is emblematic of the company’s more than 45 years of continuous MRO excellence and benchmark setting, and now it is taking its American presence to the next level and into the future.
