Russia’s S7 Says It Mastered Repairs Of Another Western Turbofan

S7 Airlines, Russia’s largest private carrier, disclosed in a company report that it had begun repairs of General Electric CF34 turbofan engines in 2025.  

For S7 Technics, the carrier’s aftermarket subsidiary, this marks the second Western engine type for which it has developed in-house repair capabilities since 2022. The company first declared competence in CFM International CFM56 overhauls.

CF34 engines power S7’s fleet of Embraer 170 regional jets. The airline is the only operator of this type in Russia and flies 17 such aircraft, aged 21-22 years. S7 began flying E170s in 2018, and in 2019 outsourced the maintenance of the CF34 engines to GE Aerospace under the TrueChoice program. The more than $85 million contract was expected to span seven years.

However, GE Aerospace—along with other Western OEMs and aftermarket providers—withdrew from Russia in 2022, after the imposition of sanctions in response to Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Before that, S7 Technics had been providing on-wing repairs for CFM56 engines at its maintenance station in Moscow Domodedovo Airport since 2016. In late 2022, the subsidiary launched an engine overhaul shop for CFM56-5B/7Bs at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport.

These engines power the backbone of the S7 fleet—Airbus A320ceo and Boeing 737NG narrowbodies. In 2025, the provider expanded the facility and added the CFM56-5A variant for A319s to its capability list.

S7 has also developed technology to restore engine blades for the CFM56 at its subsidiary Berdsk Electromechanical Plant in the Novosibirsk region and S7 Space company in Moscow. The latter was closed in 2025, and all its equipment was transferred to the Sheremetyevo engine repair shop.

According to the S7 company report, published Aug. 27, its Sheremetyevo facility has overhauled 380 engines since 2022. This figure includes 63 for the parent airline and 317 for other Russian air carriers. The facility is also certified by the Russian aviation authorities to provide overhaul for Honeywell 131-9A/B auxiliary power units.
