Following news that Liebherr-Aerospace is to expand MRO capacity in Lindenberg, Germany, the component OEM has announced the induction of its first Airbus A350 nose landing gear overhaul at the site.
The A350’s nose gear was developed, manufactured and certified by Liebherr at the Lindenberg facility, where all overhaul services for the product can also be performed in-house.
Liebherr‑Aerospace Lindenberg and Liebherr‑Aerospace Toulouse hold European Union Aviation Safety Agency DOA approvals, enabling the facilities to develop advanced repairs for their products.
The company expects a ramp-up of A350-related component MRO demand over the next few years, noting that it needs extra space due to this and the fact that the A350 nose gear is the largest landing gear it produces in Lindenberg.
At the site, Liebherr also produces slat actuation systems for the A350.
Speaking to Inside MRO in March, Sven Dicke, director for business and services at Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation, noted that maintenance revenues have grown faster than production sales since the pandemic, although Liebherr expects the latter to pick up as new aircraft output ramps up.
However, he also sees growth opportunities in maintenance, especially through digital- and data-driven applications.
“We see growth opportunities in advanced digital services—such as health monitoring, predictive maintenance and data‑driven maintenance planning. These solutions help operators improve fleet availability, reduce unscheduled events and optimize maintenance planning.”
At Lindenberg, the company repairs landing gear systems, flight control and actuation systems, air management systems, and deploys technologies such as surface treatments.
To handle higher MRO volumes in these areas, the company is demolishing an old administration building at Lindenberg and replacing it with newer, more modern infrastructure under a plan to expand customer service and assembly areas by around 65,000 ft.2
