With new service from Frankfurt and Panama City now underway, Los Cabos is shifting its air service strategy toward long-haul diversification while reinforcing its strong North American foundation.

“Los Cabos approaches air connectivity as a long-term development strategy, focused on building a balanced and resilient network rather than pursuing rapid volume growth,” Los Cabos Tourism Board Managing Director Rodrigo Esponda tells Routes. “We work closely with airlines, airports and industry partners to identify routes that are commercially sustainable and aligned with the type of demand the destination is prepared to support.”

A key milestone has been the launch of nonstop service from Frankfurt with Condor, which commenced in late 2024, marking Los Cabos’ first direct link to Germany. According to Esponda, “early results have been encouraging, with arrivals from Germany increasing by more than 90% in 2025, confirming the strategic potential of this market.”

The European push comes as Los Cabos looks to attract longer-stay, higher-spend travelers, diversifying its source markets beyond the U.S. and Canada.

In Latin America, Copa Airlines commenced a 2X-weekly service between Panama City and Los Cabos on Dec. 4, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. No other carrier currently operates the route. Esponda described the service as strategically important, noting, “This connection strengthens access to Latin America and the Caribbean through Copa’s hub in Panama City and creates a solid platform for regional connectivity.”

However, North America remains the backbone of the network. “North America … will remain our main short-term growth driver,” Esponda says, adding that forward schedules point to continued U.S. growth and a stabilizing recovery in Canada.

Recent and upcoming additions underscore that momentum. Southwest Airlines is scheduled to launch daily Las Vegas-San Jose del Cabo service on June 4, operated with 737-800 aircraft, further deepening links with secondary U.S. markets.

“Our objective is to continue building connectivity through targeted partnerships, beginning with Panama, and to allow demand to develop gradually and sustainably,” Esponda says.

For 2026 and beyond, diversification and sustainability remain central. “For Los Cabos, the main opportunity in 2026 is to continue building a more diversified and resilient air network,” he says, while cautioning that: “The current environment requires a disciplined and performance-driven approach. Demand is not developing at the same pace across all regions.”
