Mexican ULCC Volaris will introduce a domestic service between Puerto Escondido and Tijuana beginning June 2, resuming a route that airport operator Aeropuertos Mexicanos (AME) sees as supporting growing demand at the Pacific Coast destination.

“Puerto Escondido as a destination has been booming,” AME Director General Javier García Bejos told Routes during an interview at Routes Americas 2026 in Rio de Janeiro. “Last year we handled almost 1 million passengers. When we started working on this airport [in 2023], we only had 300,000 passengers.”

Volaris plans to operate the route three times per week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays—using Airbus A320 aircraft configured with 186 seats.

The service reconnects Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) with northern Mexico and the large cross-border travel market served by Tijuana International Airport. OAG Schedules Analyser data shows that Volaris last operated flights on the sector until January 2024.

Passenger growth at Puerto Escondido has been accompanied by an expansion of international connectivity. In April 2025, United Airlines launched PXM’s first international service with year-round flights from Houston. Additional routes followed later in the year, including seasonal service from Calgary by WestJet and flights from Toronto Pearson by Air Canada. American Airlines also began year-round service from Dallas/Fort Worth.

According to García Bejos, the international routes have performed strongly since launch. “This market has been amazing,” he said. “All the load factors on these routes have been 80% or higher.”

He added that demand from U.S. markets—especially Texas—has been particularly robust, suggesting further growth potential for the destination. “We can see really strong traffic from Texas to Puerto Escondido—all the flights are full,” García Bejos said. “We think that we are just scratching the surface.”

To accommodate the increasing traffic, a major airport expansion is underway. A new passenger terminal is scheduled to open in October as part of a $200 million investment aimed at increasing the airport’s capacity to more than 3 million passengers annually during the first phase. “With a new terminal and new infrastructure, I think we can attract so much more passengers and international carriers and services,” García Bejos said.
