IndiGo, Cathay Pacific and United Airlines are each entering new markets over the coming months, launching routes to Tanzania, Kazakhstan and Luxembourg.
Mumbai-Dar es Salaam
IndiGo will enter the Tanzania market in November, adding daily flights between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) and Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR).
The service will begin Nov. 20 using Airbus A320neo aircraft, subject to regulatory approvals. IndiGo will become the only Indian airline serving the route nonstop, although Air Tanzania already connects the cities.
The launch targets the largest city pair in the India-Tanzania market. Sabre Market Intelligence data shows that Mumbai-Dar es Salaam generated about 62,700 two-way O&D passengers in 2025, down 6.4% from approximately 67,000 in 2024.
Mumbai accounted for about 58% of all India-Dar es Salaam traffic during 2025. Delhi was the second-largest Indian origin, generating approximately 17,800 passengers, followed by Hyderabad with 6,100 and Chennai with 5,100. Those flows offer potential connecting traffic through IndiGo’s Mumbai network alongside local demand.
The broader India-Tanzania market grew despite the decline on the Mumbai-Dar es Salaam city pair. Two-way O&D demand reached approximately 149,000 passengers in 2025, up 9.7% from 135,800 a year earlier. Dar es Salaam accounted for about 108,300 passengers, or nearly 73% of the total, although its traffic was broadly unchanged year over year.
OAG Schedules Analyser data shows IndiGo will compete with Air Tanzania, which offers daily Mumbai-Dar es Salaam flights. IndiGo’s entry will therefore give passengers a second daily option rather than open a previously unserved market.
The addition comes as IndiGo increases its share of nonstop India-Africa capacity. The airline is offering approximately 34,100 two-way seats in October 2026, up 34.8% year over year, across services to Nairobi, Mauritius, Seychelles and Reunion. That gives it about 19% of the market, behind Ethiopian Airlines’ 45.4%. Overall nonstop capacity between India and Africa is broadly flat at approximately 179,000 seats during the month.
Hong Kong-Almaty
Cathay Pacific will enter Central Asia in January 2027, restoring nonstop passenger flights between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan after a seven-year gap.
The Oneworld member will launch service between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Almaty International Airport (ALA) on Jan. 9, operating 3X-weekly using Airbus A330-300 aircraft. Flights will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, subject to regulatory approval.
Cathay will be the only airline offering nonstop passenger service between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan. Air Astana previously served the city pair, but the route has remained suspended since 2020.
The launch comes as demand between the two markets grows from a relatively small base. Sabre Market Intelligence data shows that approximately 11,200 two-way O&D passengers traveled between Hong Kong and Almaty in 2025, up 38.5% from about 8,100 in 2024.
Almaty accounted for approximately 76.5% of the wider Hong Kong-Kazakhstan market, which totaled about 14,600 passengers during 2025, an increase of 35.2%. Astana was the second-largest city market, generating approximately 3,100 passengers.

Those figures suggest Cathay will need connecting traffic through its Hong Kong hub alongside local demand to support the widebody service. The schedule provides an evening departure from Almaty and a morning arrival in Hong Kong, giving passengers access to the carrier’s onward network.
The expansion also comes amid rapid growth in Kazakhstan’s links with mainland China. Sabre data shows approximately 832,400 two-way passengers traveled between the two countries in 2025, up 54.7% year over year. Almaty-Urumqi was the largest city pair, followed by Almaty-Beijing and Almaty-Hangzhou.
OAG Schedules Analyser data shows airlines offering approximately 184,000 two-way seats between Kazakhstan and mainland China in October 2026, up 48.3% from about 124,000 a year earlier. The number of nonstop airport pairs has increased from 16 to 22.
Cathay’s entry adds a Hong Kong option to that growing network. The airline has linked the launch to efforts to strengthen connections with countries participating in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, identifying Almaty as a gateway for business, trade and tourism in Central Asia.
Newark-Luxembourg
United Airlines will add Luxembourg to its transatlantic network in April 2027, launching daily flights from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Luxembourg Airport (LUX).
The service will begin April 2 using Airbus A321XLR aircraft, subject to government approval. United will be the only U.S. airline offering nonstop flights to Luxembourg, one of eight new destinations being added from Newark for summer 2027.
The route illustrates how the A321XLR is allowing United to expand into smaller European markets. OAG Schedules Analyser data shows approximately 63,450 two-way seats on Newark-Luxembourg during summer 2027, across 423 flights.
The aircraft will also bring the Star Alliance member’s long-haul premium products to the market. Its A321XLR cabin includes 20 Polaris business-class suites and 12 premium plus seats, allowing the airline to offer both products on the single-aisle service. Luxembourg is one of five new destinations assigned the aircraft, alongside Toulouse, Marseille, Ibiza and Valencia.
For passengers, the Newark service will provide access to the New York metropolitan area and connections through United’s U.S. hub. The daily frequency should make the route useful for business travel as well as leisure trips, although its traffic mix will depend on demand from Luxembourg and the surrounding region.
The launch forms part of a substantial expansion of United’s European network from Newark. OAG data shows the number of destinations increasing from 35 in summer 2026 to 43 in summer 2027. Two-way capacity is scheduled to rise 12.2%, from approximately 3.44 million seats to 3.86 million.
Alongside Luxembourg, the additions comprise Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia and Catania. United is also retaining the Newark routes it introduced for summer 2026 to Split, Bari, Glasgow and Santiago de Compostela.
