Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed an agreement with Boeing to acquire eight 777-8F and two 777F freighters to support its fleet modernization and cargo growth strategy.
The carrier is the first in Africa to order the 777-8F, which is yet to fly. Aviation Week's forthcoming forecast sees deliveries of the freighter beginning in 2029.
The new-generation freighter is powered by twin GE9X engines. Boeing says the freighter has a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes and a fully loaded range of 4,410 nm.
“The aircraft will offer greater payload capacity, operational flexibility, efficiency, and sustainability, and would help facilitate global trade, strengthen supply chain connectivity, and reinforce Ethiopia's position as a leading cargo gateway between Africa and international markets,” Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew said.
Ethiopian currently operates 12 777 freighters, two 767 freighters and four 737-8F aircraft. Its cargo network serves more than 70 destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.
