HAMBURG—Airbus has identified the first three customers for the Airspace cabin in the A220 narrowbody, with first deliveries planned for later this year.

With the Airspace cabin, the aircraft manufacturer intends to harmonize passenger experience across its range of aircraft. It has faced challenges in ramping up A220 production, however. When it launched the A220’s variant of the improved interior with Air Canada in April 2025, Airbus anticipated deliveries would begin in early 2026.

In addition to the Canadian carrier, Lufthansa and Qantas will receive their A220s with the Airspace cabin in 2026, Ingo Wuggetzer, Airbus’ VP of cabin marketing, said April 14 at the Aircraft Interiors Expo. Features include a new passenger service unit, lights under the baggage bins, lighting scenarios and so-called XL bins.

Planned to become part of the A220’s cabin standard, Airspace XL bins provide 20% more volume, translating into 15% more bags and 10% more payload, Wuggetzer said. The pivoting bin doors are lighter and easier to handle for flight attendants and passengers, compared to the previous drop-down shelf layout. Additionally, the doors do not protrude into the aisle, providing more room at the upper body level during the boarding and deboarding phases.
