EU Wings Planning Uzbekistan MRO Joint Venture

Italy-based MRO provider EU Wings signed a memorandum of understanding with Uzbekistan Airports to partner on establishing an aircraft maintenance joint venture at Navoi Airport, as well as for aircraft maintenance at other international airports in Uzbekistan.

STS Opens New UK Line Maintenance Stations

STS Aviation Group has opened two new line maintenance stations in the UK at East Midlands Airport and Norwich Airport. The stations will provide services including routine maintenance checks, AOG support and other line maintenance services starting April 1.

Kuehne+Nagel subsidiary Sterling has partnered with SATS to expedite first- and last-mile airside services for AOG shipments. The companies plan to first trial the shipments at Singapore and London Heathrow airports in the coming months.

LATAM Plans MRO Staff Growth

LATAM has announced plans to hire around 140 maintenance employees in Brazil by July, including around 90 aircraft maintenance technicians and 50 aeronautical mechanics. The additional staff will be added in response to LATAM’s predicted growth of its domestic operation in Brazil by 7-9% this year.

SR Technics Launches Line Maintenance Venture

SR Technics has announced a new legal entity called SR Technics Line Maintenance AG, which will launch on March 31 with Part 145 approval from the FAA and European Union Aviation Safety Agency. It will offer line and light base maintenance services with a staff of more than 200 employees.

GKN, Safran Partner On Leap Support

GKN Aerospace has signed a decade-long agreement with Safran Aircraft Engines covering new shafts and spare part production for Leap 1A engines for Airbus A320neos, with the expectation to produce similar components for the Leap 1B engine for Boeing 737 MAXs in the future.

Joramco has appointed Stephan Klose as its new chief operating officer. The company says Klose brings nearly 20 years' aviation industry experience in the Middle Eastern region, including a stint of more than 10 years in the technical division of Etihad Airways.

AAR has signed a multi-year agreement to supply surplus material for the CFM56-5B engine to Philippines-based airline Cebu Pacific. Under this agreement, AAR will support approximately 30 CFM56-5B scheduled shop visits Cebu Pacific has planned for the term of the contract.

Azul TecOps Gets EASA Maintenance Approval

Azul TecOps has received European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval for maintenance on European Union-registered aircraft. Azul says the approval occurred within the bilateral agreement signed between EASA and Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) to simplify procedures for approval of maintenance organizations.

Air Tanzania has signed a De Havilland Component Solutions Program agreement covering support of its growing fleet of Dash 8-400 aircraft. Under the deal, De Havilland will provide the airline with comprehensive MRO services and access to a strategically located parts exchange pool.

Avotek Releases Overhauled Aviation Mechanic Textbooks

Maintenance training systems provider Avotek has released a new series of aviation maintenance textbooks that follow the FAA’s Aviation Mechanic Airman Certification Standards. The books are specifically tailored to work with new Part 147 requirements and Avotek says they will simplify workload for instructors, curriculum designers and administrators.

Danish leisure carrier Sunclass Airlines has signed a contract for Lufthansa Technik to provide component support for its current and future fleet of Airbus A321neo and A330neo aircraft. In addition, an existing component support agreement for the airline's A320ceo aircraft fleet has been extended. Both contracts will run until January 2030, covering the provision of
parts from Lufthansa Technik's material pool, MRO and logistics services as well as a placing parts stock at Sunclass' main hub in Copenhagen.

ARSA Releases 2024 MRO Workforce Data

The Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA) has released statistics showing that employment in the U.S. civil aviation maintenance industry is up nearly 3.5% in early 2024 compared to early 2023, with nearly 329,000 workers. Part 145 repair stations account for 56% of the workforce, followed by air carriers at 23% and parts manufacturing and distribution companies at 21%.

ST Engineering has signed an agreement with Embraer Defense & Security to explore collaboration in areas such as engineering, maintenance and support service activities for the C-390 Millennium multi-mission transport aircraft in the Asia-Pacific region.

Global Component Asia Opts For DHL’s SAF Program

Malaysia-based MRO provider Global Component Asia has joined DHL Express’ GoGreen Plus program as part of its commitment to 30% reduction in carbon emissions using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for its time-definite international shipments. GoGreenPlus was launched in 2023 and allows customers to contribute toward funding SAF through a book-and-claim methodology, which can be credited for Scope 3 emission reporting.

EVA Air has signed a 10-year service contract with HAECO covering landing gear overhauls for its fleet of 34 Boeing 777-300ER and 777 freighter aircraft. HAECO will carry out services from its facility at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport.

Icelandair Signs GTF EngineWise Agreement

MESA Gets New Base Maintenance Approvals

The National Authority of Civil Aviation of Portugal (ANAC) has certified Portuguese maintenance provider MESA to perform an enhanced scope of base maintenance on Airbus A330 aircraft equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. It has also certified MESA to conduct base maintenance in intervals of up to 48 months on Airbus A340 aircraft.

MAB Engineering Leases Additional Maintenance Hangar

MAB Engineering has signed a lease agreement for the Hangar 4 airframe maintenance facility at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Malaysia. It says the facility will provide capacity to accommodate one widebody and two narrowbody aircraft simultaneously.

HAECO has signed a new contract with Air Canada, under which HAECO Hong Kong will become the airline’s exclusive base maintenance provider for its Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 fleet. The contract spans five years with an option for an additional five years.

GA Telesis Sees Landing Gear Growth

GA Telesis has reported that revenue for its landing gear business has grown 112% on a compounded annual growth basis since its introduction in 2019, accounting for more than 20% of total revenue for its MRO Services group.

AMETEK Singapore Gets Honeywell Repair Approval

AMETEK Singapore PTE has been appointed as a Honeywell authorized repair center for solid state flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders for Airbus A320/A330/A340 and Boeing 737NG/MAX and 777 aircraft. Under the five-year agreement, AMETEK will be able to offer full test and repair capability for the products.

Air India Plans IFE Upgrades

Air India has signed a deal with Thales to equip 51 of its aircraft with Thales’ Avant Up in-flight entertainment system. Under the deal, 40 of its Boeing 777 and 787s will be retrofitted with the technology and eleven new aircraft, including 787s and Airbus A350s, will be linefit with the technology.

Eagle Services Asia Expansion

Lufthansa Technik Philippines has completed its first 12-year maintenance check on an Airbus A380 aircraft. The MRO provider carried out the check on a Lufthansa Airlines-operated A380 from its facility in Manila last week. After completing the most heavy check, the aircraft returned to Germany.

SIAEC Divests Additive Flight Solutions

SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC) has entered an agreement to sell its 60% shareholding in Additive Flight Solutions to Stratasys. The Singapore-based joint venture between SIAEC and Stratasys manufactures aircraft cabin interior parts and tooling for the aviation MRO sector using 3D printing technology. Stratasys previously held 40% shareholding.

ANAC, Transport Canada Sign Maintenance Reciprocity Agreement

The National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC) has signed a reciprocity agreement with Transport Canada outlining terms and conditions for acceptance and reciprocal recognition of aeronautical maintenance organizations. Under the agreement, Transport Canada will no longer require fees for initial approvals from Brazil-based maintenance organizations and component maintenance workshops will be accepted reciprocally between both agencies without the need for certification.

Joby Gets Part 145 Certificate

Electric vertical take-off-and-landing (eVTOL) developer Joby has received an FAA Part 145 certificate to perform maintenance activities on aircraft. It will begin performing select airframe, radio and instrument repairs on traditional aircraft and plans to expand its MRO services in the coming months and years. The certification also enables Joby to provide paid on-the-job training to future aircraft technicians.

Ryanair, Joramco Extend Heavy Maintenance Agreement

Ryanair has extended its maintenance agreement with Joramco to 10 lines of heavy maintenance for the next 10 years in Amman, Jordan. The agreement is aimed at providing Ryanair with flexibility on placing aircraft for upcoming winter maintenance seasons as its fleet grows to more than 800 aircraft by the end of the decade.

LHT To Support China Southern A350 APUs

China Southern Airlines and Lufthansa Technik have signed terms on an eight-year agreement related to technical support of the Chinese carrier’s auxiliary power units on its Airbus A350 fleet. Under the terms of the contract, Lufthansa Technik will provide MRO services for the Honeywell HGT1700 APU from its specialized workshops in Hamburg. The agreement covers around 20 A350 aircraft but is open to expansion should China Southern opt for additional A350s in future.

Avianca Migrates MRO Software To The Cloud

Colombian airline Avianca has completed the migration of Swiss-AS’s AMOS maintenance software from an on-premesis set up to a cloud-based solution. The carrier transitioned to AMOScloud, a Google Cloud hosted platform. Avianca says the move was driven by a need for better scalability, cost-effectiveness, and operational agility. The project took around seven months to complete.

First Aviation Services is bundling MRO support for Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The new program combines in-house and external repair and maintenance covering electronics, hydraulics and dynamic components on the helicopter—with one single point of content for the customer.

Japan Airlines Migration

Japan Airlines is migrating NetLine/Ops++Maintenance Control, which it has used since 2006, to Lufthansa Systems’ Global Aviation Cloud version. The airline signed a five-year contract for the service.

Turkish Technic Makes A330P2F Headway

EFW says its passenger-to-freighter conversion partner Turkish Technic has achieved a key milestone on the first A330P2F conversion. Turkish Technic recently performed the upper frame shell cut-out for the aircraft at its Istanbul facilities. The completed freighter conversion will be redelivered to Air Transport Services Group in mid-2024.

TCR International Buys KLM Equipment Services

KLM subsidiary KLM Equipment Services (KES) has been bought by TCR International. Under the agreement, KLM will become a TCR customer for maintenance and leasing of ground support equipment and KES’s refueling activities will be transferred to KLM Ground Services.

Boeing Global Services Reports Q4 2023 Results

In its 2023 fourth quarter results, Boeing reported that revenue for its Global Services business increased 6% year-on-year to $4.8 billion and its operating margin increased to 17.4%, which it says reflects higher commercial volume and mix.

Joel English has been appointed president of the Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM), succeeding Gerald Yagen, who will continue to serve as chairman of the board. English has been executive vice president of AIM since 2020 and has also served as VP of operations, regional director and campus executive director. Over the past eight years, he expanded AIM from 11 to 15 campuses.

New Aero Norway COO

Dag Johnsen has been appointed chief operating officer at engine repair specialist Aero Norway, replacing Neil Russell, who became CEO in October 2023. Johnsen previously managed United Airlines’ powerplant engineering team and, prior to that, held engineering roles at Continental Airlines.

Eirtech Aviation Services has appointed Ventura Quirino as senior vice president of engineering for its U.S. operations. He will lead growth of its customer base in the U.S. from Eirtech’s offices in Irvine, California. Eirtech Aviation Services opened its first U.S. facility in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas in October 2023.

GATES Wilmington Facility Inducts First CFM56-7B For Disassembly

GA Telesis Engine Services (GATES) has inducted its first CFM56-7b engine for disassembly and completed two CFM56-7B LPT module disassemblies at its Specialized Procedures Aeroengine Hospital in Wilmington, Ohio. The facility received its FAA Part 145 certificate in November 2023.

Commercial Aftermarket Growth At Collins, Pratt

In RTX’s fourth quarter 2023 results, Collins Aerospace reported a 23% increase in commercial aftermarket business and Pratt & Whitney reported an 18% increase in commercial aftermarket.

American Launches Los Angeles Workforce Training Partnership

American Airlines has launched a partnership with West Los Angeles College to train future aviation maintenance technicians (AMT). Under the partnership, students will have ongoing engagement opportunities with American’s Los Angeles-based technicians, and top-performing students will receive guaranteed interviews at the airline. The airline has also donated tools to the college’s AMT program.

AEI Mulls New Freighter Conversion Options  

In its 2023 year-end recap, Aeronautical Engineers, Inc. (AEI) said its B737-800SF freighter conversion will represent the majority of its deliveries in 2024, but it expects the total quantity to be slightly below 2023 figures. It adds that it plans to complete studies on potentially introducing new freighter conversion programs for the Boeing 737-900 and the Bombardier CRJ 900.  

Canadian Airlines Select Jetaire Invicta For 737s  

Canadian airline operators Canadian North and Nolinor Aviation have selected Jetaire’s foam-based Invicta fuel tank ignition mitigation product for their Boeing 737 fleets to comply with FAA’s Fuel Tank Flammability Reduction Rule.

Nordic Aviation Capital Sets Up Materials Unit  

Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) has formed an NAC Materials unit focused on sourcing, leasing and trading airframe and engine components for ATR turboprop aircraft, including propellers, avionics and landing gear. The unit will also manage and optimize NAC’s remaining General Electric CF34 engine inventory as the company phases out its Embraer E190/195 leased fleet.  

Airbus, Heligo Charters Sign Helicopter Services Contract  

Airbus has signed an HCare services contract with India’s Heligo Charters for six Airbus H145 helicopters. Under the five-year contract, Heligo will be able to replace scheduled and unscheduled components within 24 hr. and pay a fixed rate per hour of helicopter flown, which Airbus says will help bring down maintenance costs.

Sunshine Avionics Licenses Honeywell Display Products 

HEICO subsidiary Sunshine Avionics has entered into an exclusive license agreement and acquired cockpit display and legacy display product line assets from Honeywell. It will now be able to produce, sell and repair Boeing 737NG and 777 cockpit displays, as well as other legacy displays for Boeing 717, ATR and certain business and general aviation aircraft.  

FAA Extends Comment Period For International Testing Proposal 

The Aeronautical Repair Station Association reports that the FAA has extended its comment period on a proposed rule to impose drug and alcohol testing requirements on maintenance personnel located outside the U.S. to April 5.

EVA Air, Rolls-Royce Partner For Trent Maintenance

EVA Air has signed a letter of intent with Rolls-Royce for a TotalCare maintenance agreement covering 36 Trent XWB-97 engines that will power 18 new Airbus A350-1000s. The agreement marks the first time the airline will have the Trent engine in its fleet.

TAT Technologies has signed a five-year contract with an unnamed international airline for APU MRO services. The contract, valued at $10 million, will cover GTCP331 model APUs, which are used on Boeing 757 and 767 fleets.

Air Algerie Opts For ATR, Swiss-AS Digital Cooperation
 
Air Algerie will be the launch customer for a new digital maintenance documentation service provided by ATR in partnership with Swiss-AS. Under the three-year contract, ATR will provide operators with raw data of line maintenance publications in XML format, which will be uploaded into the airline’s Swiss-AS AMOS maintenance software.

Tyonek Services Group has acquired a 68,000 ft.² hangar in Huntsville, Alabama for maintenance of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft. It had previously leased the facility since 2018 for services including MRO, equipment installation, testing and manufacturing services.

Magnetic, Singapore Confirm Line Maintenance Agreement
 
Magnetic Line, the line maintenance unit of Estonia-based Magnetic Group, has announced a new line maintenance partnership with Singapore Airlines based at Frankfurt Airport. The airline operates several flights to the German capitol, using a fleet that includes Airbus A350, A380, and Boeing 777 aircraft. The agreement begins from this month.

New TP Aerospace Facility Gains EASA Certficiation
 
TP Aerospace's new wheels and brakes facility in the Czech Republic has been granted European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification. Towards the end of 2023, the German LBA regulator successfuly performed the final audit for the new site located in the city of Brno, giving it EASA Part-145 approval. TP Aerospace says the new maintenance shop will have annual capacity for around 15,000 repairs and overhauls.

Riyadh Air has signed an agreement with Swiss-AS to use its AMOS software to manage maintenance, engineering and logistics processes. AerSale received an FAA supplemental type certificate on Dec. 6 for its AerAware enhanced flight vision system for Boeing 737 NGs. The system incorporates synthetic vision and enhanced vision systems with the primary flight display symbology to provide pilots situational awareness. AerSale worked with Universal Avionics on the system and developed the certification program under a license from Boeing.
 
AerFin Reaches Engine Milestone
UK-based AerFin has recently taken delivery of 11 CFM56 and nine V2500 engines, bringing the total number of engines acquired by the company since 2013 to 250. The company will teardown the engines from its facility in Caerphilly to supply the aftermarket with used serviceable material.

Lufthansa Technik has announced leadership changes at two of its European subsidiaries. Pat Foley joined Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon as CEO and managing director of Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon, effective Aug. 1. Foley has been with Lufthansa Technik since 1992 and was most recently CEO at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico. Maria Cilia assumed the position as head of base maintenance and CEO of the Lufthansa Technik Malta business on Sept 1. Cilia has 16 years' experience in the aviation industry and was most recently Cilia has more than 16 years of experience in the aviation inudstry and was most recently head of planning and engineering at Lufthansa Technik Sofia.

Lufthansa Plans A320 Overhead Bin Retrofits
Lufthansa plans to retrofit 38 of its Airbus A320s with Airspace L Bins, a new overhead bin product developed by Elbe Flugzeugwerke and Airbus that the companies say provides 60% more cabin luggage space. Lufthansa will be the first Airbus customer for the L Bins. It will begin retrofits from early 2025.

Marshall Aerospace Breaks Ground On U.S. MRO Facility
Marshall Aerospace has begun construction on a new maintenance facility in Greensboro, North Carolina that it expects to start operating from in early 2025. The hangar will feature six bays for aircraft maintenance and one additional paint bay. Marshall says the facility will help it meet high demand for maintenance of U.S. fleets of Hercules C-130 tactical transport aircraft.
 
CAAC, AFRA Sign Aircraft Disassembly MOU
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA) have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on international aircraft parts disassembly standards and compliance. The cooperation will support the application of CCAR-145 approval to disassembly facilities outside China based on AFRA accreditation for limited disassembly functions.

Dublin Aerospace Appoints New Base Maintenance Lead

MRO provider Dublin Aerospace has appointed Dominic Ryan as general manager of base maintenance and auxiliary power unit (APU) services. Ryan assumed the new role earlier this month and has worked in the aviation industry for more than four decades across several roles at Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus, where he was most recently the airline's director of maintenance. In his new role at Dublin Aerospace, Ryan will oversee the management of the aircraft maintenance and overhaul process, including APU overhaul and repair, ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining safety and quality standards.

LHT, Uzbekistan Airways Reach Maintenance Milestone

Lufthansa Technik and Uzbekistan Airways recently marked 30 years of maintenance cooperation. Aerial firefighting specialist Coulson Aviation has received certification from Argentina’s Administracion Nacional de Aviacion Civil (ANAC) to perform aircraft maintenance on Argentinian-registered aircraft. Coulson says it is the only Canadian company to receive ANAC certification to perform specialized and non-specialized aircraft maintenance.

Market research firm Fortune Business Insights projects that the global aviation MRO software market will see a compound annual growth rate of 5.45% between 2023-30. Transavia Picks Satair For Airbus Supply Chain Support

Satair has signed an agreement with Transavia for the Dutch low-cost carrier to use its integrated material services (IMS) solution. The multi-year IMS partnership is the first strategic collaboration between Satair and Transavia and covers its upcoming Airbus A321neo aircraft scheduled to enter its fleet later this year. The contract will cover Transavia's requirements for expendable materials for line and base maintenance operations.

Aviatic MRO plans to hire around 1,000 technicians to work at the facility.

Ryanair Confirms Joramco Agreement

Ryanair has confirmed a five-year heavy maintenance agreement with Joramco, through which it will utilize up to six heavy maintenance lines at the Jordanian MRO provider’s facility in Amman. Joramco plans to conduct 41 checks for the airline during the upcoming winter season.

Allegiant Mechanics Get New Ratified Contract

Allegiant has ratified a new contract agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents the airline’s maintenance technicians, stores employees and administrative maintenance staff. The new agreement includes what it says are significant increases in rates and a two-year extension to the amenable date of the current bargaining agreement, Oct. 31, 2028.

LATAM Airlines Brasil To hire 300 Mechanics

LATAM Airlines Brasil is set to hire 300 mechanics by the end of this year, in anticipation of an expected growth in operations. The carrier is seeking line maintenance staff to work at 25 airports in Brazil and its Sao Paulo MRO facility. It says that more than 90 positions will be available at Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport.

Collins Opens Expanded Additive Center In Iowa

Collins Aerospace has opened a new $14 million expansion to its additive manufacturing center in West Des Moines, Iowa. SkyWest Airlines has become the first North American operator to license GE Aerospace’s 360 Foam Wash system, which it will use to clean its CF34 engines. Avensis Lands NAVIS P2F Launch Customer

Germany-based Universal Sky Carrier will be the launch customer for Avensis Aviation’s NAVIS passenger-to-freighter conversion program, which entails a full conversion with a main deck cargo door and cargo loading system. Marshall Gets AMT Program Funding

Marshall University will receive $1 million from the Small Business Administration to continue supporting aviation workforce development. AMT School Offering 90% Tuition Scholarships

Airbus Lands A330 Maintenance Contract

Latin American carrier Boliviana de Aviacion has signed an Airbus Flight Hour Services agreement for maintenance-by-the-hour support of its leased A330-200 fleet. The contract covers repair and integrated component services, including an on-site stock pool at Viru Viru International Airport in Bolivia.

Triumph Wins ITP Aero MRO Contract

Triumph, Moog Partner On 787 MRO

Triumph Group and Moog have signed a five-year agreement to provide MRO services for Boeing 787 landing gear and cargo door actuation control systems. MYAirline Signs Honeywell APU Contract

Honeywell has secured a maintenance contract with Malaysian low-cost carrier MYAirline for the 131-9A auxiliary power units (APU) on its fleet of Airbus A320s. Under the five-year, non-exclusive maintenance contract it will provide services for the APUs on MYAirline’s entire A320 fleet, which is expected to grow from 22 to 55 aircraft over the next three years.

TransDigm Acquires Calspan

TransDigm has completed its acquisition of Calspan, an independent provider of testing and technology development services and systems for the aerospace and defense industry. Headquartered in Buffalo, New York with facilities across the U.S., Calspan’s transonic wind tunnel in Buffalo is used in aftermarket-focused development activities for commercial and defense aerospace markets.

Avia Solutions Group Sets Up Dublin Headquarters

Avia Solutions Group has moved its global headquarters to Dublin, a move which it says will make it the second-largest Irish-registered aviation business behind Ryanair. CEO Jonas Janukenas says the move to be closer to Ireland’s aviation community “is a strategically important step for us in terms of our further development plans.”

Lufthansa Technik Signs JetSMART Contract

Lufthansa Technik has signed a five-year contract with Chilean carrier JetSMART for continuing airworthiness management organization support and aircraft engineering services. It has already begun on-site support for the airline in Santiago, with the collaboration initially covering 25 Airbus A320 family aircraft.

ICAO Data Shows Growth In Female AMTs

The International Civil Aviation Organization has released global survey data that shows the percentage of female aircraft maintenance engineers and technicians grew from 2.7% in 2016 to 3% in 2021. Increases were seen in all regions except for the Middle East and Africa, with the highest increases in the Asia-Pacific and Latin American/Caribbean regions. The survey shows Asia-Pacific has the highest percentage of women in these roles, at 4.4%.

AMP Aero Services Acquires Major Parts Inventory

AMP Aero Services has acquired an inventory of more than 88,000 parts. It says the lots include aircraft engine material for CFM International CFM56 and CF6-80C2, and Pratt & Whitney PW4000 and V2500 engines, as well as Boeing and Airbus airframe parts. It says the inventory will be positioned in Miami and Arkansas and available for purchase in the next 30-45 days.

Delta TechOps Signs $225 Million In Q1 Component Contracts

Delta TechOps announced it has signed nine component MRO contracts worth $225 million during the first quarter of 2023. It says the agreements, which run between 3-5 years, cover Airbus and Boeing fleets for customers including cargo carriers and passenger airlines. The MRO programs will cover parts ranging from avionics, mechanical, fuel and hydraulic components.

Ryanair Building Eco-Friendly Hangar

Ryanair plans to construct a new four-bay hangar to expand its aircraft maintenance facility at Dublin Airport. It says the hangar will be "one of the most environmentally friendly hangars in the EU" and will create more than 200 new jobs for engineers and mechanics. Construction will begin in the fourth quarter of 2023, with expected operations beginning in the second quarter of 2025.

Korean MRO Sharp Technics K has signed an agreement with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to establish a new passenger-to-freighter conversion facility at Incheon International Airport for Boeing 777-ERSF aircraft. Under the agreement, IAI plans to begin converting aircraft in 2024.

SR Technics, Safran Developing New Engine Test Cell In Zurich

SR Technics has begun construction work for reactivation of its second test cell at Zurich Airport in partnership with Safran Test Cells. The test cell has been designed to meet testing requirements for new engine types, such as the PW1100G-JM, CFM Leap-1A and -1B, and CFM 56-5B and -7B. The companies expect the test cell to be ready for entry-into-service by mid-2024.

AerSale Plans New Tennessee MRO Facility

Jet Aviation Gets Zurich Line Maintenance Approval

New Teruel Airport Hangar

Saudia Aerospace Engineering Industries (SAEI) has entered into a 10-year FlightSense agreement with Collins Aerospace. The contract covers the airline's fleet of Airbus A320, A330 and Boeing 787 aircraft. Collins will provide SAEI with asset pooling support and services for the aircraft.

Marshall Aerospace Opens New Aerostructures Hangar

Marshall Aerospace has opened a new aerostructures production facility in Cambridge, UK. The new facility will see the production of auxiliary fuels tanks for P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, a military derivative of Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft. Additionally, the facility has incorporated few sustainability initiatives including, solar PV installations on the hangar roof, LED lighting with passive infrared control, high efficiency VRF air conditioning, and twin-socketed chargers for electric vehicles.

GA Telesis To Dissasemble Two Boeing 767-300s

GA Telesis has expanded its inventory of used serviceable material (USM) with the disassembly of two Boeing 767-300 aircraft. The company's Component Solutions team will will distribute the materials to airline and MRO customers globally from its U.S. and UK-based distribution centers.

ExecuJet MRO Services Gets European Line Maintenance Approval

ExecuJet MRO Services Belgium has been granted approval by the Belgium Civil Aviation Authority and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency to provide line maintenance in other European countries. The regulatory approval covers its mobile repair unit, which previously focused mostly on AOG situations.

SriLankan Airlines To Implement AMOS

SriLankan Airlines and Swiss-AS have partnered for the implementation of AMOS NewGen MRO system. The carrier will implement AMOS mobile and cloud hosting services, which the airline says will allow them to digitalize and streamline their maintenance procedures, increase efficiency, and reduce the overall costs through process automation.

Collins Launches New Technology Initiative

Collins Aerospace has launched its Powered by Collins Initiative, which seeks to collaborate with deep technology firms on advanced technologies that could be used to create new products and services for the aerospace industry. It is initially seeking technologies applicable to four areas: extravehicular space mobility, high-performance batteries, autonomy for small unmanned aerial vehicles and composites recycling. Applications for the program close on May 19th.

STS Gains UK Part 21J Approval

STS Aviation Services has been granted Part 21J approval by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. It says the approval complements its aircraft maintenance and modification capabilities, and will be a first step toward adding supplemental type certificate and Part 21G production organizations approvals to its capabilities in the near future.

Southwest Airlines Tests Drag Reduction Retrofits

Southwest Airlines has flown the first revenue flight featuring an aircraft with Aero Design Labs’ drag reduction kit installed. The Boeing 737-700 was one of five aircraft Southwest is using to run a network evaluation of the drag kits, which are aimed at reducing fuel burn rate and carbon emissions.

VAS Acquiring More A320-Family Teardowns

VAS Aero Services will acquire two additional Airbus A320-family aircraft for teardown from Avolon Aerospace Leasing. The A319-100 and A320-100 will be disassembled in Hondo, Texas, with used serviceable materials being distributed through VAS Aero Services’ airline operator customer base.

GA Telesis Sees Landing Gear Boom

GA Telesis has reported significant growth in demand for landing gear services. Its MRO Services Component Repair Group overhauled more than 100 landing gear legs in 2022 and GA Telesis says revenue for its landing gear business has grown 149% since the service was introduced in 2019, comprising 20% of total revenue for its MRO Services group.

New C&L Aviation Services Director Of Maintenance

C&L Aviation Services has appointed Michael Jackson as director of maintenance, where he will oversee all repair station activities. Jackson comes to C&L from American Airlines, where he worked for three decades, most recently serving as senior manager of technical operations.

Precision Aviation Group Acquires PTB Group

Precision Aviation Group (PAG) has acquired PTB Group, a provider of MRO and supply chain services with locations in the U.S. and Australia through subsidiaries Pacific Turbine USA Group, Pacific Turbine Brisbane, Pacific Turbine Leasing and International Air Parts. PAG says the acquisition expands is engine services and supply chain capabilities.

New IAMA Chairman of the Executive Board

The Independent Aircraft Modifier Alliance (IAMA) has elected Frans van de Pol as chairman of the executive board. He joined IAMA’s board in 2021, and also leads Fokker Services’ engineering business unit. Van de Pol will replace outgoing chair Marc Pinault, who stepped down on March 7.

HAECO Adds Engine Capabilities In Dallas

HAECO Global Engine Support has added a new eight-bay gantry system at its Dallas facility, as well as new Leap-1A and -1B tooling to support its technicians in performing hospital maintenance-level work. It plans to begin performing quick-turn maintenance tasks by mid-March.

Storm Aviation Gets Calibration Accreditation

Storm Aviation has been approved by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), which assesses companies against national and international standards related to conformity assessment for calibration services. It says the accreditation boosts trust that its tools and equipment “are being calibrated to the highest level.”

MTU Maintenance Gains New Approvals

MTU Maintenance has received new approvals at its facilities in Australia and Brazil. MTU Maintenance Service Centre Australia has gained Part 145 approval from Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority for CF34-series engines. MTU Maintenance do Brasil in Sao Paulo has gained FAA approval for the CFM56 engine family.

Ecube’s U.S. Facility Begins First Teardown

Ecube has begun its first teardown project at its new U.S. facility in Coolidge, Arizona. It is tearing down an Airbus A319 for inaugural customer Killick Aerospace. Ecube’s U.S. facility has welcomed more than 10 aircraft since it opened in October 2022.

Barfield has signed a partnership agreement with Dedienne Aerospace to distribute and service its ground test equipment. Barfield says the agreement will help it expand its distribution network and improve services for customers.

New MAAS Aviation CEO

MAAS Aviation has appointed Jan van Engelen as its new CEO. Van Engelen has more than 25 years in the aviation services industry, where he most recently served as Swissport’s CEO for Continental Europe. He succeeds Tim Macdougald, who will take on the role of chief business development officer.

Emirates Signs LHT MRO Contracts

Emirates has signed two major MRO contracts with Lufthansa Technik (LHT) for services on its Airbus A380 aircraft. Under the deals, LHT will overhaul main landing gears and provide base maintenance. The latter agreement is Emirates’ first time outsourcing heavy checks for A380s.

Joramco C Check Agreements

Joramco has signed an agreement with Air Europa to perform C checks on four Boeing 787 aircraft. It has also signed its first agreement with Cebu Pacific, under which it will perform C checks on its Airbus A330 aircraft starting this month.

Joramco has signed a maintenance agreement with Emirates to perform nose-to-tail C checks and modifications on the airline’s Boeing 777 fleet. The agreement runs through June 2024.

Etihad Expanding Abu Dhabi Maintenance Facility

Etihad Airways Engineering plans to expand the capacity of its aircraft maintenance facility adjacent to Abu Dhabi International Airport. In addition to adding 50,000 m2 (approximately 540,000 ft.2) of incremental space to the facility, it will build two new widebody hangars.

Safran Aircraft Engine Services Brussels has begun construction on its new site at Brussels Airport, which will support Leap-1A and -1B engines. It plans to begin operation in the first quarter of 2024 and recruit more than 80 staff over the next two years.

Beacon Signs First Helicopter Operator Customer

Embraer has signed its first helicopter operator for use of its Beacon maintenance coordination digital platform. Ocean Explorer, a Brazilian helicopter operator, will use the platform to streamline maintenance operations for its fleet of Airbus ACH160 helicopters.

VAS Aero Acquires Two Boeing 737-700 Aircraft

VAS Aero Services has acquired two Boeing 737-700 aircraft for teardown and subsequent parts harvesting. The company will disassemble both aircraft at its facility in Marana, Arizona. Work is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2023. The company says that the disassembled USM will be distributed through its airline operators and MRO customer base.  

SR Technics, Satair Sign IMS Agreement

SR Technics and Satair have signed five-year integrated material service (IMS) contract for more than 5,000 parts to be available on consignment stock and maintain on-time delivery.

MRO Boosts Triumph’s Q3 Results

Triumph Group reported that its sales for the third quarter of fiscal year 2023 were up 21% organically from the prior year period, which it attributes to increases in commercial MRO and narrowbody production, as well as recovering military rotorcraft volume.

Lufthansa Cargo Takes Flight With AeroSHARK

The first Lufthansa Cargo Boeing 777F featuring AeroSHARK fuel-saving surface technology entered scheduled service on Feb. 3. According to Lufthansa Technik, which developed AeroSHARK with coatings specialist BASF, Lufthansa Cargo’s entire 777 freighter fleet will gradually receive modifications to incorporate the technology.

AllClear Repair Services Gets EASA Part 145 Certification

AllClear Repair Services, a subsidiary of AllClear Aerospace & Defense, has received EASA Part 145 approval. Based in Miramar, Florida, it specializes in repair and overhaul of pneumatic, hydraulic, fuel, landing gear, brakes and electro-mechanical systems for commercial and defense platforms. It says the new certification enables it to offer dual release certifications.

New Iberia Maintenance Director

Iberia Maintenance announced plans to appoint Enrique Robledo as its new maintenance director, effective March 17. Robledo has held various maintenance roles at Iberia since 1999, most recently as deputy manager of the engine workshop. He will replace Andy Best, who will become maintenance director at British Airways.
