FCAH Aerospace, FEAM Partner At CVG

FCAH Aerospace subsidiary Cobalt Aero Services has expanded its operations at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG) through a strategic partnership with FEAM Aero. It will be co-locating its airframe structures repair expertise within FEAM’s recently expanded hangar there, including on-site and on-aircraft composite repair support and aircraft accessories repair.

StandardAero Expanding Augusta Business Aviation MRO Facility

StandardAero is building an 80,500 ft.² hangar expansion at its business aviation MRO facility at Augusta Regional Airport, which it says will increase its footprint there by more than 60%. The new facility, which is expected to be completed in 2025, will enable StandardAero to support super mid-size to large cabin aircraft and expand its engine shop.

FTAI Aviation Lands LATAM Engine Agreement

LATAM Airlines has signed a perpetual power agreement with FTAI Aviation, through which FTAI will provide engine maintenance, repair and exchange services for CFM International CFM56 and IAE V2500 engines. It says the program is designed to provide cost savings and flexibility by avoiding shop visits through engine exchanges.

Artemis Aerospace Opens Singapore Hub

Component solutions provider Artemis Aerospace has opened a hub in Singapore. The UK-headquartered company opened two new hubs in the U.S. earlier this year in Miami and Los Angeles. It says the new hubs will streamline orders and deliveries for customers in both regions.

Gulf Air Starts Future Workforce Training Partnership

Gulf Air and BAS Aircraft Engineering Training Center (BAETC) have signed an agreement to partner on enhancing aircraft maintenance training in Bahrain. Under the agreement, Gulf Air’s technical affairs division will work with students on maintenance activities to give them experience required to complete the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s Part 66 license.

Sanad Grows Khalifa University Partnership

Sanad has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi-based Khalifa University to grow future workforce collaboration. Sanad will offer local and international hands-on training opportunities for students, as well as provide lectures for students at Khalifa University. Sanad has been working with the university since 2010, including exploring technologies for the MRO sector.

HAECO Extends China Airlines 777 Support

China Airlines has extended its partnership with HAECO covering inventory technical management and landing gear services. Under the new agreement, HAECO will provide services such as component pooling, component repair management, component reliability management, AOG support and provision of onsite consignment stock in Taipei for the airline’s Boeing 777 fleet until 2032.

KMC Announces Moroccan P2F Joint Venture

Kansas Modification Center (KMC), Stratos Industries and Integrated Aerospace Alliance have partnered to construct a Boeing 777-300ER passenger-to-freighter production facility at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, Morocco. KMC says construction of the three widebody hangars will increase its passenger-to-freighter (P2F) production output by up to eight additional aircraft per year.

AAR Expands V2500 Component Distribution Deal

AAR has signed an extension and expansion of its IAE V2500 engine component distribution agreement with Sumitomo Precision Products, under which it will distribute the engine’s pneumatic starter and control valve for the life of the program. The agreement also expands AAR’s exclusive distributorship with the addition of all V2500 starter/valve subcomponents.

C&L Acquires Saab 340B Inventory From JAL Subsidiaries

C&L Aerospace has acquired an inventory of Saab 340B parts from Japan Air Commuter and Hokkaido Air System, including more than 4,500 rotable and consumable parts. The inventory will be held at C&L’s facility in Bangor, Maine and available for outright purchase.

AAR has broken ground on an expansion of its Oklahoma City MRO facility, which will support its recently expanded maintenance commitment from Alaska Airlines. GlobalX Chooses Skywise Health Monitoring

Passenger and cargo charter airline Global Crossing Airlines (GlobalX) has chosen Airbus’ Skywise Health Monitoring tool for its current and future fleet of Airbus A320-family aircraft. The shop, which opened last year, provides a range of shorter workscopes, such as borescope inspections, engine module changes an boroblend repairs, as well as full test cell capability. AAR Breaks Ground On Miami Expansion

ARSA Releases 2024 MRO Workforce Data

The Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA) has released statistics showing that employment in the U.S. civil aviation maintenance industry is up nearly 3.5% in early 2024 compared to early 2023, with nearly 329,000 workers. Part 145 repair stations account for 56% of the workforce, followed by air carriers at 23% and parts manufacturing and distribution companies at 21%.

Malaysia-based MRO provider Global Component Asia has joined DHL Express’ GoGreen Plus program as part of its commitment to 30% reduction in carbon emissions using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for its time-definite international shipments. The National Authority of Civil Aviation of Portugal (ANAC) has certified Portuguese maintenance provider MESA to perform an enhanced scope of base maintenance on Airbus A330 aircraft equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. It has also certified MESA to conduct base maintenance in intervals of up to 48 months on Airbus A340 aircraft.

ANAC, Transport Canada Sign Maintenance Reciprocity Agreement

The National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC) has signed a reciprocity agreement with Transport Canada outlining terms and conditions for acceptance and reciprocal recognition of aeronautical maintenance organizations. Under the agreement, Transport Canada will no longer require fees for initial approvals from Brazil-based maintenance organizations and component maintenance workshops will be accepted reciprocally between both agencies without the need for certification.

LHT To Support China Southern A350 APUs

China Southern Airlines and Lufthansa Technik have signed terms on an eight-year agreement related to technical support of the Chinese carrier’s auxiliary power units on its Airbus A350 fleet. Under the terms of the contract, Lufthansa Technik will provide MRO services for the Honeywell HGT1700 APU from its specialized workshops in Hamburg. The agreement covers around 20 A350 aircraft but is open to expansion should China Southern opt for additional A350s in future.

Avianca Migrates MRO Software To The Cloud

Colombian airline Avianca has completed the migration of Swiss-AS’s AMOS maintenance software from an on-premesis set up to a cloud-based solution. The carrier transitioned to AMOScloud, a Google Cloud hosted platform. Avianca says the move was driven by a need for better scalability, cost-effectiveness, and operational agility. The project took around seven months to complete.

AEI Mulls New Freighter Conversion Options  

In its 2023 year-end recap, Aeronautical Engineers, Inc. (AEI) said its B737-800SF freighter conversion will represent the majority of its deliveries in 2024, but it expects the total quantity to be slightly below 2023 figures. It adds that it plans to complete studies on potentially introducing new freighter conversion programs for the Boeing 737-900 and the Bombardier CRJ 900.

Nordic Aviation Capital Sets Up Materials Unit  

Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) has formed an NAC Materials unit focused on sourcing, leasing and trading airframe and engine components for ATR turboprop aircraft, including propellers, avionics and landing gear. The unit will also manage and optimize NAC’s remaining General Electric CF34 engine inventory as the company phases out its Embraer E190/195 leased fleet.  

Airbus, Heligo Charters Sign Helicopter Services Contract  

Airbus has signed an HCare services contract with India’s Heligo Charters for six Airbus H145 helicopters. Under the five-year contract, Heligo will be able to replace scheduled and unscheduled components within 24 hr. and pay a fixed rate per hour of helicopter flown, which Airbus says will help bring down maintenance costs.

Sunshine Avionics Licenses Honeywell Display Products 

HEICO subsidiary Sunshine Avionics has entered into an exclusive license agreement and acquired cockpit display and legacy display product line assets from Honeywell. It will now be able to produce, sell and repair Boeing 737NG and 777 cockpit displays, as well as other legacy displays for Boeing 717, ATR and certain business and general aviation aircraft.  

FAA Extends Comment Period For International Testing Proposal 

The Aeronautical Repair Station Association reports that the FAA has extended its comment period on a proposed rule to impose drug and alcohol testing requirements on maintenance personnel located outside the U.S. to April 5.

EVA Air has signed a letter of intent with Rolls-Royce for a TotalCare maintenance agreement covering 36 Trent XWB-97 engines that will power 18 new Airbus A350-1000s. The agreement marks the first time the airline will have the Trent engine in its fleet.

Air Algerie Opts For ATR, Swiss-AS Digital Cooperation
Air Algerie will be the launch customer for a new digital maintenance documentation service provided by ATR in partnership with Swiss-AS. Under the three-year contract, ATR will provide operators with raw data of line maintenance publications in XML format, which will be uploaded into the airline’s Swiss-AS AMOS maintenance software.

TP Aerospace says the new maintenance shop will have annual capacity for around 15,000 repairs and overhauls.

StandardAero Inducts First Leap Engine 
StandardAero has inducted its first CFM Leap engine following preparations throughout 2023 to offer maintenance on the engine platform from its San Antonio facility. Components provider Spairliners has named Michael Vollrath as its new managing director and chief financial officer. Both will jointly lead the executive board of Spairliners, which speciaizes in parts for Embraer E-Jet family aircraft. Marshall Aerospace has begun construction on a new maintenance facility in Greensboro, North Carolina that it expects to start operating from in early 2025. Marshall says the facility will help it meet high demand for maintenance of U.S. fleets of Hercules C-130 tactical transport aircraft.
CAAC, AFRA Sign Aircraft Disassembly MOU
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA) have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on international aircraft parts disassembly standards and compliance. Turkish, Emirates Expand 777 Base Maintenance Agreement

Turkish Technic has signed a base maintenance agreement with Emirates, which will extend an initial agreement signed in April that covered five of the airline’s Boeing 777s. It will begin performing base maintenance services for another 17 of Emirates’ 777s in July.

Leadership Changes At SR Technics

Matthias Dullmann has been appointed as the new CEO of SR Technics, succeeding Jean-Marc Lenz, who will continue in a part-time senior advisory function. Dullmann was most recently chief financial officer at SR Technics, and he will be succeeded by Remo Voehringer. Owen McClave, SR Technics’ senior vice president of operations, will also become chief operating officer.

International Aero Engines (IAE) has appointed Kim Kinsley as its first female president, and she has concurrently been named vice president of V2500 programs at Pratt & Whitney. She was most recently vice president of environmental and airframe control systems—power and controls at Collins Aerospace. Kinsley succeeds Earl Exum, who will become chair of the IAE board.

AirBaltic Launches Revamped MRO Internship Program

AirBaltic has launched what it says is an improved version of its SkyTech internship program, through which students will gain hands-on experience working alongside its maintenance technicians. Students can choose between three program subdivisions: apprenticeship by school, to expand theoretical knowledge; apprenticeship in aircraft maintenance; and apprentice in maintenance support, within the airline’s engineering and planning or logistics divisions.

Aeroman, Liebherr Partner On Heat Exchanger MRO

Aeroman and Liebherr-Aerospace have signed a heat exchanger maintenance services agreement. Under the agreement, Liebherr will qualify Aeroman’s industrial capabilities to clean and repair its Airbus A320 heat transfer equipment. Liebherr Aerospace Saline, its facility in Michigan, will also provide Aeroman with major repair services, including re-cores.

Aftermarket materials and services provider KP Aviation has secured an investment from Bain Capital Special Situations, which it will use to accelerate its global expansion. SkyWest Licenses GE 360 Foam Wash

SkyWest Airlines has become the first North American operator to license GE Aerospace’s 360 Foam Wash system, which it will use to clean its CF34 engines. GE says the airline is its largest operator of CF34 engines. It also estimates the system could help SkyWest reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 13,900 metric tons per year.

Spirit And MAB Engineering Partner On MRO

Spirit AeroSystems and MAB Engineering signed a partnership agreement to provide MRO services for nacelle and flight control surfaces to Malaysia Airlines, as well as other operators at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The agreement finalizes a memorandum of understanding the companies signed at MRO Asia-Pacific in 2022.

Honeywell has secured a maintenance contract with Malaysian low-cost carrier MYAirline for the 131-9A auxiliary power units (APU) on its fleet of Airbus A320s. Under the five-year, non-exclusive maintenance contract it will provide services for the APUs on MYAirline’s entire A320 fleet, which is expected to grow from 22 to 55 aircraft over the next three years.

ICAO Data Shows Growth In Female AMTs

The International Civil Aviation Organization has released global survey data that shows the percentage of female aircraft maintenance engineers and technicians grew from 2.7% in 2016 to 3% in 2021. Increases were seen in all regions except for the Middle East and Africa, with the highest increases in the Asia-Pacific and Latin American/Caribbean regions. The survey shows Asia-Pacific has the highest percentage of women in these roles, at 4.4%.

AMP Aero Services Acquires Major Parts Inventory

AMP Aero Services has acquired an inventory of more than 88,000 parts. It says the lots include aircraft engine material for CFM International CFM56 and CF6-80C2, and Pratt & Whitney PW4000 and V2500 engines, as well as Boeing and Airbus airframe parts. It says the inventory will be positioned in Miami and Arkansas and available for purchase in the next 30-45 days.

Southwest Airlines has flown the first revenue flight featuring an aircraft with Aero Design Labs’ drag reduction kit installed. TAT Technologies Expands APU Contracts

TAT Technologies has signed a five-year contract extension with an undisclosed global carrier for auxiliary power unit (APU) MRO services. Under the deal it will support GTCP331 model APUs, building on contracts it signed with Honeywell in 2020 and 2021 to repair and overhaul APUs for key Airbus and Boeing platforms.

Azerbaijan Airlines has signed a five-year, Total Component Support contract with Lufthansa Technik (LHT) for its Boeing 787 fleet. Under the agreement, which takes effect May 1, the airline will have access to LHT’s spare parts pool network, as well as AOG support and other component services.

AFI KLM E&M has signed a dedicated component support agreement with Nile Air for its fleet of six Airbus A320-200s. Under the deal, AFI KLM E&M will support an extensive range of components, including accessories and line replaceable units for CFM56-5B and IAE V2500 engines.

Willis Gets Base Maintenance Approval

Willis Lease Finance Corporation subsidiary Willis Aviation Services Limited has received UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) base maintenance approval for the Airbus A320 family, Boeing 737NG, ATR 42/72 and Embraer 135/145 aircraft. It says the new approvals complement its existing UK CAA and European Union Aviation Safety Agency line maintenance approvals.

MRO Boosts Triumph’s Q3 Results

Triumph Group reported that its sales for the third quarter of fiscal year 2023 were up 21% organically from the prior year period, which it attributes to increases in commercial MRO and narrowbody production, as well as recovering military rotorcraft volume.

Turkish Technic Wins Air Serbia Base Maintenance Contract

Air Serbia has signed an MRO agreement with Turkish Technic for base maintenance services on four Airbus A320 family aircraft and one A330. Turkish Technic has already begun maintenance on one A320ceo at its Istanbul Ataturk Airport facilities and it perform maintenance on the remaining aircraft in the upcoming months.

Aiir Innovations, a Dutch startup using artificial intelligence technology to automate aircraft engine inspections, has raised €2.1 million (approximately $2.3 million) in venture capital investment. It says it will use the funding to grow its team and expand globally.

Lufthansa Cargo Takes Flight With AeroSHARK

The first Lufthansa Cargo Boeing 777F featuring AeroSHARK fuel-saving surface technology entered scheduled service on Feb. 3. According to Lufthansa Technik, which developed AeroSHARK with coatings specialist BASF, Lufthansa Cargo’s entire 777 freighter fleet will gradually receive modifications to incorporate the technology.

Ontic Signs Honeywell License Agreement

Ontic has signed a license agreement with Honeywell covering its vacuum generator and check valve waste management product line, which is used across Boeing 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 platforms. Under the deal, Ontic will adopt all existing contracts for the products, including service center agreements, to ensure continued maintenance support and spares.

AllClear Repair Services Gets EASA Part 145 Certification

AllClear Repair Services, a subsidiary of AllClear Aerospace & Defense, has received EASA Part 145 approval. Based in Miramar, Florida, it specializes in repair and overhaul of pneumatic, hydraulic, fuel, landing gear, brakes and electro-mechanical systems for commercial and defense platforms. It says the new certification enables it to offer dual release certifications.

ATR has appointed Stefano Marazzani as its senior vice president of customer support and services. Marazzani has a background in aircraft maintenance, customer support and operations, most recently serving as CEO of SuperJet International.

New Iberia Maintenance Director

Iberia Maintenance announced plans to appoint Enrique Robledo as its new maintenance director, effective March 17. Robledo has held various maintenance roles at Iberia since 1999, most recently as deputy manager of the engine workshop. He will replace Andy Best, who will become maintenance director at British Airways.

Aftermarket distributor and MRO services provider VSE Corporation has acquired Precision Fuel Components, a provider of MRO services for engine accessory and fuel systems in the business and general aviation market. VSE says the acquisition expands its capabilities within business and general aviation and rotorcraft markets, complementing its existing service capabilities.
