Fresh from announcing its first Airbus A321XLR routes to Athens, Indian LCC IndiGo has unveiled plans to add another European point to its growing network, with nonstop flights from Mumbai to Copenhagen launching in October.
The new route will operate three times per week from Oct. 8 using Boeing 787-9s wet-leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. Copenhagen becomes IndiGo’s 44th international destination and marks the airline’s debut in Scandinavia. “This expansion strengthens our presence in Europe, offering Copenhagen as a gateway to the Nordic region for Indian travellers,” IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers says.
IndiGo will be the sole carrier on the Mumbai–Copenhagen sector once flights commence, OAG Schedules Analyser data shows. However, the airline will soon be joined by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) when the SkyTeam alliance member returns to India from next June after a 17-year absence.
The Denmark–India market totaled about 155,500 two-way O&D passengers in 2024, up 23% year on year, according to Sabre Market Intelligence figures. About 33,000 of those traveled nonstop, while the majority routed through hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Frankfurt.
The launch extends IndiGo’s push into long-haul markets as it prepares for the arrival of its own widebodies. The airline has 30 A350-900s on order from 2027 and 70 A321XLRs from 2026. In the interim, it is deploying six Norse Atlantic 787-9s on damp lease to support services to Europe and beyond. The first two began operating in July on routes to Manchester and Amsterdam, with London Heathrow flights scheduled to start on Oct. 26.
IndiGo’s Copenhagen service follows the announcement on Sept. 15 that Athens will be the inaugural market for its A321XLRs. From January 2026, the carrier plans to serve the Greek capital three times per week from both Mumbai and New Delhi. The Athens flights will coincide with Aegean Airlines’ planned launch of its own A321XLR services to New Delhi and Mumbai in 2026, with the two carriers set to codeshare to extend connectivity across their respective networks.
IndiGo’s Copenhagen service will mark the third nonstop link between India and the Nordics, according to OAG data. Air India currently operates 3X-weekly 787-8 flights between New Delhi and Copenhagen, while Finnair flies daily from Helsinki to New Delhi with A330-300s. Before the pandemic, Air India also connected New Delhi and Stockholm, but that route has yet to return.
