Air Niugini Fokker 100
Air Niugini has announced it has chosen the Airbus A220 family to replace its current Fokker regional aircraft fleet.
The New Guinea-based carrier said it will order 11 A220s, split between the -100 and -300 variants, Air Niugini said in a social media post. The aircraft are expected to begin arriving from 2025.
In its own post, Airbus said it is “pleased that Air Niugini has become the latest airline to select the A220 and look[s] forward to finalizing the purchase agreement.”
The purchase decision has been approved by the country’s National Executive Council, allowing the carrier to advance to the next stage of the order process.
This is the first time the airline has purchased new regional jets, said Air Niugini acting CEO Gary Seddon. The carrier currently has four Fokker 70s with two stored, and four Fokker 100s with three stored, according to the Aviation Week Network Fleet Discovery database.
Air Niugini said the A220s can be used for international and domestic flights. The aircraft also have more capacity.
The airline also operates one Boeing 737-800 and two 767-300ERs. It finalized orders for two 787-8s in June.
