European line maintenance specialist Nayak Aircraft Services acquired a controlling stake in Portuguese aviation services provider LAS Group in September.
While the deal increases its line maintenance coverage in Portugal, it also provides new capabilities and labor support as Nayak looks to broaden its presence across Europe.
Marco Smit, managing director of Nayak Aircraft Services, spoke with Aviation Week about how the deal will expand the company's business. “With the acquisition, there is a team of nearly 100 aviation professionals joining the Nayak group and growing the capacity to support our customers in Portugal,” he says.
LAS Maintenance, LAS Group's line maintenance subsidiary, has operations across five airports in Portugal—Faro, Lisbon, Madeira Funchal, Ponta Delgada and Porto—strengthening Nayak's coverage across the Portuguese market.
LAS Maintenance holds capabilities across a broad range of aircraft, with AirbusA320ceo and A320neo family aircraft and Boeing 737 Next Generation and 737 MAX aircraft forming the core of the narrowbody workload. Its capabilities also extend to Airbus A330s, A350s, Boeing 777s and Boeing 787s. Freighter support is covered by certifications for the Airbus A300 and Boeing 757 and Boeing 767s.
Beyond line maintenance, the acquisition also brings LAS Group's training and human resources businesses, LAS Training and SLOT Human Resources, into Nayak's portfolio, extending its in-house training capabilities and adding a labor support function for resourcing and consulting assignments across the Nayak network. Smit says both entities will give Nayak more access to resources and better in-house flexibility to have qualified labor at the right time and in the right place.
“We are carefully growing and aligning our strategy to stay in the lead in Europe for line maintenance services,” Smit says. He notes that Nayak is also increasing its base maintenance and painting capabilities.
