Japan Airlines (JAL) has begun construction of a new aircraft landing gear maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at the Tokyo Haneda Airport maintenance district, expanding its in-house support capabilities.
To support the initiative, JAL has established a new subsidiary, Landing Gear Innovation Factory (LIF), with capital of JPY5.1 million ($31,809).
Scheduled for completion by the end of December 2027, the facility will perform heavy landing gear overhauls, a process typically conducted every 10 years that requires removing the landing gear from the aircraft for detailed inspection and refurbishment.
The scope of work will include plating, next-generation thermal spraying, painting, surface treatment and non-destructive inspections.
JAL said the facility will incorporate automated and labor-saving systems, as well as advanced equipment and technologies being introduced in Japan for the first time.
Aviation Week has contacted JAL for additional details on the aircraft types and landing gear systems that will be supported at the facility.
