SINGAPORE—HAECO, Toyota Tsusho, Japan Airlines (JAL) and Vietnam's Sun Group have agreed to establish a joint venture to develop a major aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at Van Don International Airport in northern Vietnam, with operations targeted to begin in 2028.

The $360 million project will cover approximately 170,000 m2 (1,800,000 ft.2) and is set to become one of the country's largest aviation maintenance facilities.

The cornerstone is a four-bay widebody hangar, with additional flexibility for narrowbody maintenance in the mid-bays.

The venture is expected to create around 1,000 jobs. HAECO has already begun recruiting Vietnamese technicians and is training them at its maintenance facilities in Xiamen, China.

JAL said Vietnam's domestic maintenance capacity has not kept pace with the rapid growth of the country's airline sector, creating an urgent need for additional MRO capability. It added that the facility is intended to address the growing supply-demand imbalance while strengthening Vietnam's long-term technical self-sufficiency.

Van Don International Airport is owned by conglomerate Sun Group, which also operates Phu Quoc International Airport and recently launched Sun Phu Quoc Airways.

Toyota Tsusho's role in the venture will leverage its experience in global supply chain development and management, as well as its expertise in building cross-border business partnerships.
