FL Technics has officially begun operations at its new MRO facility in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with the arrival of its first customer aircraft.

While FL Technics is not disclosing the operator of the Airbus A320ceo, it announced in April that JetBlue Airways is its launch customer at the MRO facility. FL Technics will be providing JetBlue with airframe base maintenance for its A320 family aircraft.

According to FL Technics, the five-bay heavy maintenance hangar in Punta Cana is the first facility of its kind in the country, and the company’s first dedicated heavy maintenance site in the Americas. The Lithuania-headquartered company aims to expand its presence in the Americas to meet growing demand for narrowbody maintenance from airlines and operators in the region.

“Our long-term mission is to bring safe and efficient aviation MRO services closer to our customers across the Americas while helping strengthen the aviation ecosystem in the regions where we operate,” says Juozas Lapeika, chief base maintenance officer at FL Technics. “This is the first step in FL Technics’ journey in the Caribbean, but we believe it marks the beginning of something much bigger for the Dominican aviation industry.”

The 20,000 m2 (approximately 215,278 ft.2) facility is equipped to support Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family aircraft. FL Technics received maintenance organization certification for the facility from the FAA and the Dominican Republic’s Instituto Dominicano De Aviacion Civil in June.

As FL Technics ramps up operations in Punta Cana, it also intends to expand hangar capacity, increase service offerings and continue developing its local workforce, with the intention of growing to up to 2,000 employees. “One of our next big steps will be the launch of a dedicated aviation MRO academy to train technicians locally and build a solid pipeline of talent for the future,” says Mejico Angeles-Lithgow, CEO of FL Technics in the Dominican Republic.
