LE BOURGET—Diehl says it would expand its work with defense electronics specialist Hensoldt to evolve its air and missile defense equipment as battlefield requirements change.

Among the efforts the companies plan to pursue is to increase the ability to shoot-and-scoot, or relocate an air defense system at pace, to avoid being struck by the adversary, the companies said in a joint June 17 statement.

“Our potential adversaries are also striving to increase their efficiency through faster reconnaissance and combat. Therefore, it is sometimes advisable to change one's position after a shot or a volley,” Diehl Defense boss Helmut Rauch says. “We are working on fully automated processes and at least semi-autonomous vehicles so that we can change position as quickly as possible despite reduced personnel deployment."

The companies say they would initially work on developing the Diehl IRIS-T SLM air defense system, infusing machine learning techniques to bolster performance of the TRML-4D fire control radar.
