United Airlines will increase capacity to and from Florida destinations for the northern hemisphere winter season, citing “record-breaking demand for winter travel.”

Added capacity will come in part from operating larger aircraft on primarily leisure routes. From Nov. 28, United will utilize a Boeing 737-700 on flights from Key West International Airport (EYW) in Florida to the airline’s Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) base hub, putting a mainline aircraft on the route. It will also deploy the 737-700 on flights from EYW to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Washington Dulles International Airport.

United says it will increase frequencies on flights from ORD to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers and Miami International Airport for the winter season. It will also add more flights between its Denver hub and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

The carrier says it will operate a 777 between ORD and Orlando International Airport (MCO) for the winter season.

On its winter schedule, United will resume daily service between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) in Ohio and Tampa International Airport in Florida using a 737-900ER. It will also add frequencies from CLE to FLL, RSW and MCO.

“According to new search and booking data from United.com, Miami and Orlando are two of the top-five most-searched domestic travel destinations this winter,” United says in a statement. “Honolulu, Cancun and Las Vegas round out the top-five most-searched destinations from Nov. 1 to March 31.”

The airline notes that “demand for travel to Florida this winter is up significantly compared to last year,” adding: “United is flying larger aircraft that give customers more options on how they choose to fly with the airline.”

United says it will operate the Airbus A321neo, a new aircraft in its fleet, “on select routes to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Fort Myers, Florida, beginning in December, adding more seats to some of Florida's most popular cities.”

United is also planning to boost service this winter from EWR to western U.S. ski destinations. The carrier says there will be added capacity from EWR to Bozeman, Montana, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It also plans to add more capacity from EWR to three Colorado destinations: Montrose, Steamboat Springs and Vail.

"We know that November is when most people start their winter travel planning, so we're adding these flights to give customers more options than ever," says Mark Weithofer, United's managing director of domestic network planning.
