TAP Air Portugal is expanding its offering to Brazil with plans to open flights to Manaus-Eduardo Gomes International Airport (MAO), a destination it has not served in eight years.

TAP served Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonia, from Lisbon Airport (LIS), in Portugal, from 2014 to 2016. From Nov. 4, the carrier will restart the LIS-MAO route, operating the service with a stop in Belem, Brazil—already part of TAP’s network—as part of the itinerary.

The one-stop, same-aircraft service will be flown 3X-weekly with an Airbus A321neo aircraft.

MAO will be the 13th airport in Brazil served by TAP, with 11 connected only to LIS. São Paulo/Guarulho and Rio de Janeiro/Galeão airports are both served from LIS and Porto.

Meanwhile, TAP plans to launch service between LIS and Florianopolis in southern Brazil from Sept. 3. That route will be flown 3X-weekly with an A330-200 aircraft configured to carry 269 passengers, including 25 seats in business class.

"Brazil is strategic for TAP, and the return of our flight to Manaus is another sign that we will continue to invest in the development of our operations in that country,” TAP CEO Luís Rodrigues said in a statement. He added there will be “at least” 15 routes to Brazil by the end of the year, indicating another route announcement is possible. That will be the most routes to Brazil ever served by TAP, Rodrigues noted.
