ULCC Spirit Airlines will begin daily service between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) in November.

Flights on the route will start Nov. 15 with an Airbus A320, according to PIT. Miami will become the ninth destination Spirit will serve from the Pennsylvania airport.

American Airlines is currently the only operator on the MIA-PIT route. American's website shows it will be operating 2X-daily A319 service on the route by mid-November, a boost from daily flights currently.

Spirit does fly from PIT to its base at Florida's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), operating the route daily. FLL is about 25 mi. north of MIA. Southwest Airlines also operates daily service between PIT and FLL.

According to PIT, Spirit will additionally restart daily seasonal service to both Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers and Tampa International Airport (TPA) from Nov. 15. Southwest operates both routes.

PIT notes Breeze Airways will launch service to TPA from Oct. 5 and to RSW from Nov. 15.

“In the first quarter of 2023 alone, PIT saw its largest quarterly number of passengers traveling to and from Florida in more than two decades,” PIT says in a statement. The airport cites U.S. Transportation Department statistics denoting nearly 2,900 passengers flew daily between PIT and Florida destinations during the 2023 first quarter.

“The record-breaking traffic is attributed to the growing number of nonstop flights and seats in the market,” PIT says. “In 2014, PIT had nonstop service to six total destinations in Florida—that number is now 14.”

The airport is averaging 17 daily departures to Florida destinations this year, PIT says. The busiest Florida market served from Pittsburgh is Orlando International Airport (MCO), accounting for nearly a third of PIT-Florida passengers. Following MCO are TPA, FLL and RSW.
