RwandAir to start flights to more African destinations

In an interview with Bloomberg, RwandAir's CEO John Mirenge revealed the airline's plans to expand its fleet and add more destinations in the hope of becoming a profitable airline by 2015.

Rwanda's national carrier, which started flying in 2002, is based in the capital, Kigali. Mirenge told Bloomberg that last year the airline had boosted passenger numbers by 80% to 360,000 and expects a further 39% increase this year.

According to Bloomberg, the airline serves 12 destinations with a fleet of two Boeing 737-800s, two Boeing 737-500s, two Bombardier CRJ-900 NextGens and a Bombardier Dash-8 100. Mirenge told the news site that the airline would be taking delivery of two Boeing 737-700s this year, as it retires the 737-500s.

Mirenge said the new aircraft will provide feeder flights that connect passengers arriving in Rwanda to destinations including Johannesburg, Lagos and Dubai,
He added that by May the airline will be adding flights to the South Sudanese capital of Juba, the Ghanaian capital, Accra, and the island of Zanzibar. He also told Bloomberg that flights to Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, and Cape Town will be added later this year.
