Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the Negele Borena Geda Airport in the Oromia Region on May 27, marking the country’s latest domestic aviation expansion.
The new facility, located in southern Ethiopia, is equipped to handle advanced aircraft including the Boeing 737 MAX.
Announcing the opening on social media, Ahmed said the airport would immediately begin operating 3X weekly flights designed to stimulate local commerce, cross-border trade, and tourism in the region.
“Every new runway we build bridges a gap, unlocks regional economic potential, and brings our people closer together,” he wrote.
The inauguration brings Ethiopian Airlines’ total domestic destinations to 24. It completes a trio of airport openings announced by the airline in February—the Gore Metu and Debre Markos airports have already commenced passenger services.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew described the expansion of the three airports as a transformative step for both the airline and the nation.
“This expansion reflects our steadfast commitment to enhancing connectivity within Ethiopia and serves as a powerful driver of economic growth and regional development,” Tasew said, adding that the airline’s mission is to build an air transport network that makes travel accessible to all communities and unlocks economic opportunities across the country.
