Adelaide Airport reveals its ambitions during World Routes 2018.
What have been your most notable route successes this year?
While we didn’t get a brand new international route in the last 12 months, we had lots of success with upscaling.
International:
- Malaysia Airlines increased from 4 to 5 weekly return flights from July.
- Cathay Pacific to increase from 5 to 6 weekly return flights from October.
- Air New Zealand up gauged its narrow body A320 aircraft to a widebody Dreamliner operation from October 2017.
- China Southern Airlines will increase from 3 to 5 weekly return flights from October and will operate seasonal daily flights between Dec-18 and Feb-19
- Fiji Airways announced Adelaide as the first launch port for its first B737 Max 8 aircraft (scheduled for December 2018)
- Singapore Airlines will introduce seasonal flights to 10 weekly return flights in Jan 19
Domestic:
- FlyPelican introduced a new service from Newcastle in March (3 weekly)
- Jetstar increased from 3 to 4 weekly return flights to Avalon in March
What are you next targets for route development?
Our key target and a great opportunity is a direct service to mainland USA. We have growing demand from both the US (inbound visitors) and for outbound from Adelaide.
Other areas of opportunity are to increase capacity on our key Asia routes to Singapore, Guangzhou, Bali, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.
What is your main message at World Routes?
We have two main messages at World Routes this year.. Firstly Adelaide is a growing destination in terms of tourism, business events, fresh food exports and innovation, making us an appealing route for airlines. The second message is that, as host of World Routes next year, we are excited to welcome delegates to our city to experience Adelaide first-hand. We encourage everyone to visit our stand and to come to the Farewell Function to get a taste of what’s to come in 2019.
What can delegates expect when they visit Adelaide in 2019?
Delegates will experience a vibrant Australian city, great food and wine when dining in our restaurants, and over 200 cellar doors (for wine tasting) within one hour of Adelaide. Delegates will enjoy a city that is easy to get around and explore, thanks to the well laid out design and city planning. Generally people who have never been before are surprised at what Adelaide has to offer – the bars, restaurants, parklands, beaches, museums…… It’s easy to see why Adelaide has been voted in the Top 10 most liveable cities for the past 7 years.
