Menzies Aviation, which has operations at 40 airports across Africa, says it has signed on to IATA’s Focus Africa initiative, which aims to increase aviation safety, security and connectivity on the continent.

Menzies provides ground services, cargo handling and fueling services at airports around the world. IATA figures show African airlines growing revenue passenger kilometers 87.1% year-over-year in the 2023 first quarter, Menzies says. The company says it will add “innovative solutions to help address challenges” to aviation growth in Africa.

The company says it is working toward achieving the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) certification or re-certification at 16 African airports.

“The potential for air travel in Africa is huge,” Menzies Aviation Head of Africa Abdoulaye Cisse says in a statement. “It has 17% of the world’s population yet only contributes about 2% of total global travel.

"While there are hurdles to overcome, joining the IATA Focus Africa initiative is a testament to our long-term commitment to the continent, and our desire to collaborate with industry leaders to improve aviation safety, facilitate growth and contribute to Africa’s development journey.”

Kamil Al Awadhi, IATA’s regional vice president for Africa and the Middle East, adds: “Strong partnerships are critical to the success of Focus Africa and its ability to support the development of a resilient African air transport industry that will foster economic growth, drive skills development and support job creation. Menzies Aviation joining Focus Africa strengthens the coalition and builds even more momentum for the initiative.”

IATA says Focus Africa is concentrated on improving operational safety “through a data-driven, collaborative program to reduce safety incidents and accidents, in the air and on the ground.” The initiative also seeks to facilitate the growth and efficiency of Africa’s aviation infrastructure. Other areas of focus include connectivity, sustainability and promoting “aviation as a career path to ensure a steady supply of diverse talent ready to meet future industry needs,” according to IATA.
