EgyptAir is set to launch a new direct service between the UK’s Birmingham Airport (BHX) and Cairo International Airport (CAI), marking the first nonstop connection between the two cities.
The airline will begin operating the route Oct. 27 with four flights per week using its newly acquired Boeing 737-8 aircraft.
The new service will expand Birmingham Airport’s Egyptian network, which already includes routes to Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, and will become the airport’s only direct link to the Egyptian capital.
In a statement, EgyptAir described the frequent schedule as a “highly versatile” option for travelers across the Midlands. Passengers flying from Birmingham will also gain access to EgyptAir’s wider network through Cairo, with onward connections to destinations across Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
“This route will strengthen our Egyptian offering, providing greater choice for our customers direct from Birmingham Airport,” says Matt Hazelwood, chief commercial officer at Birmingham Airport.
EgyptAir Chairman and CEO Captain Mohamed Elian says the move demonstrated the airline’s commitment to the UK market. “Expanding our footprint in the UK by adding Birmingham to our route map reflects our commitment to a market that holds tremendous significance for EgyptAir,” he says.
The Birmingham launch forms part of a wider expansion program for the airline. EgyptAir has also announced a new route between Cairo and Zanzibar, Tanzania, commencing on Sept. 4. The service will operate twice weekly using 737-800 aircraft.
