Delta Air Lines will commence service between Honolulu International Airport (HNL) and Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) in October.

The daily flights, to be operated from Oct. 28 with a Boeing 767-300ER, restart a route the airline flew before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Delta previously connected HNL to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT). The airline moved all of its Tokyo flying from NRT to HND in 2020.

Delta will compete with Hawaiian Airlines on the route.The HNL-based carrier uses an Airbus A330-200 for the service.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) both fly the route, as well, with United Airlines placing its code on ANA’s 787-9 service. JAL also operates a 787-9 on the route.

HNL will become the seventh U.S. airport from which Delta operates to HND.

"As travel demand gradually recovers in Japan, we decided to add the new Honolulu service to our HND network," Delta Managing Director and President for Japan Victor Osumi says in a statement. "Our commitment to both markets remains strong."
