American Airlines will suspend six domestic routes, including four from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), for two months starting in August.
The carrier cited “elevated fuel costs” for the temporary suspensions, which will be in effect from Aug. 5 through Oct. 5. The four routes to be suspended from LAX include flights to two Ohio airports: Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) and John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH).
The carrier will also suspend service during the period from LAX to Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). American has only been operating the LAX-CLE and LAX-IAD routes since early April.
American hub Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will see two California airports dropped from the airline’s schedule for the two-month period: Ontario International Airport (ONT) in southern California and Sacramento International Airport (SAC), which serves the state’s capital.
“American has seasonally adjusted service on select routes in August and September as the airline refines its capacity growth for 2026,” an airline spokesperson told Aviation Week. “American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment.”
The spokesperson added that American will “continue to evaluate our network and capacity plans” in light of high fuel costs.
The carrier currently offers 2,408 two-way weekly seats on both the LAX-CLE and LAX-IAD routes, according to OAG Schedules Analyzer data. United Airlines flies both routes and is scheduled to continue operating the services during the period of American’s suspensions.
American also competes against United on the LAX-CMH and LAX-PIT routes, and is scheduled to continue flying both routes during American’s suspensions, according to OAG data.
American is the exclusive operator on the CLT-ONT and CLT-SAC services, leaving both routes without nonstop service from Aug. 5 through Oct. 5. The airline currently offers 2,604 two-way weekly seats on both routes.
According to Airlines for America’s tracking of average daily jet fuel prices for airports in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New York, jet fuel prices currently stand at $3.23 per gallon, down from a peak of $4.88 per gallon on April 2 but elevated from $2.42 in late February.
