The latest news on airports globally, with updates on financing, infrastructure expansion and sustainability initiatives.
Honolulu Inouye International Airport (HNL) augmented its bus shuttle service with three electric tram vehicles with capacity to carry 40 passengers each. The vehicles feature open-air cars and will move domestic passengers between gates and terminals. The electric shuttles will operate along the same routes as traditional gasoline-powered buses transporting passengers between C and G gates and Terminals 1 and 2. Passengers can board the trams with carry-on baggage. The electric shuttles were acquired through Hawaii's Electric Vehicle as a Service program. Each electric tram costs $255,000. The vehicles feature “technology-ready monitoring capabilities, including cameras and GPS, to support fleet visibility and safety,” according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Melbourne Airport (MEL) CEO Lorie Argus said the airport is in the “final stages” of commissioning a new A$500 million ($353 million) international baggage system. “When it opens it will more than double the capacity of our existing outbound system, while also paving the way for passenger experience enhancements such as anytime check-in,” she said. Argus also outlined the top five countries for MEL's international visitor numbers for January: 59,000 from China, 57,000 from New Zealand, 29,000 from India, 23,000 from the UK and 18,000 from the U.S.
Zurich Airport (ZRH) will be conducting a series of runway, taxiway and airfield improvements between March and October, much of which will take place at night to avoid interrupting flight operations. “Nighttime work is required whenever construction activities must be carried out in the immediate vicinity of operational airfield areas and cannot be performed during the day for operational and safety-related reasons,” the airport said. ZRH warned some of the projects will emit high noise levels. Works include maintenance work on ZRH Runway 16/34’s joint sealant to prevent damage caused by water. Technical modifications will be done on a pumping station that will “require noise-intensive sheet piling work.” Additionally, the airfield’s Dock A will be rebuilt, with work occurring both during the day and at night.
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), Mumbai’s new $2 billion air gateway, is now handling flights 24 hr. daily. The airport opened Dec. 25, 2025, and operated between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. in its initial weeks of service. Adani Airports Holdings is managing NMI and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as a twin airport system. Air India Express, Asaka Air and IndiGo connect NMI to 16 domestic destinations.
Austin Bergstrom International Airport completed a 75,000-ft.2 expansion of its passenger terminal. The project’s centerpiece was the addition of a new eight-lane TSA checkpoint, which will open to passengers on Feb. 23.
Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) in Wisconsin received a $4 million grant from the U.S. government. The funds will “support critical taxiway upgrades and other airfield rehabilitation projects,” GRB said. "These taxiway and rehabilitation projects strengthen the foundation of our airfield operations,” Airport Director Marty Piette added.
