Air Transat has postponed plans to launch nonstop service between Toronto and Accra, delaying what would have been the first nonstop link between Canada and Ghana.
The leisure carrier had planned to begin 2X-weekly seasonal service between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Accra’s Kotoka International Airport from June 17 to Oct. 22, using Airbus A321LR aircraft. However, the airline said the route will not proceed as scheduled.
“We confirm that the launch of our new route between Toronto and Accra, initially scheduled for summer 2026 has been postponed,” the airline said in a statement to Aviation Week. “Operational and commercial considerations have led us to reassess the launch timeline for this route to ensure we can deliver a service that fully meets our standards and our customers’ expectations.”
However, Air Transat added that it still intends to launch the route in the future. “We are actively continuing our efforts to integrate Accra into our program at a later date, once the conditions are in place to support the successful launch of this destination.”
The Toronto-Accra route had been positioned as part of Air Transat’s expansion into Africa, targeting VFR traffic and diaspora travel, particularly from Ontario’s large Ghanaian community. The service would have eliminated the need for passengers to connect via European hubs, which currently handle most Canada-Ghana traffic.
Sabre Market Intelligence data shows that O&D traffic between Canada and Ghana totaled about 61,100 two-way passengers in 2025, down 10% on the previous 12 months. Toronto-Accra was the largest city pair last year, accounting for about 62% of the traffic.
Canada and Ghana signed their first air transport agreement in April 2025, allowing for 14X-weekly passenger flights and 10X-weekly all-cargo flights for the airlines of each country.
Details of the 5,421-mi. Toronto-Accra route were announced in November, shortly after Air Transat unveiled plans to add service to Senegal and Morocco. Flights between Montreal and Dakar are scheduled to start on June 17, operating 2X-weekly, while Montreal-Agadir flights will be 1X-weekly from June 12.
