Airline In Focus: Avianca

Founded on 05-Dec-1919 and renamed Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia SA (Avianca) in 1940, the carrier is Colombia's national airline. Routes Americas attendee Avianca operates an extensive network of services across North and South America, the Caribbean and Europe from its hub at Bogota El Dorado International Airport. The carrier is part of Avianca Holdings SA, in which the German Efromovich-led Synergy Group was the largest shareholder. Avianca Holdings was formed in 2010 as a result of a merger between Avianca and TACA. The group included several airlines previously part of Avianca SA and Grupo TACA, but all operated under the Avianca brand. Avianca Holdings is publicly listed on the Bolsa Colombia (PFAVH) and NYSE (AVH). Avianca joined the Star Alliance in Jun-2012. Avianca established Regional Express Americas in Jun-2018, a regional sub division of Avianca Holdings S.A.
On 10-May-2020, Avianca filed for bankruptcy protection due to the coronavirus pandemic. The airline hopes to emerge as “a better, more efficient airline that operates for many more years.”
On 01-Dec-2021, Avianca announced the completion of its restructuring process and subsequent emergence from Chapter 11 proceedings.
