Mammoth Freighters is continuing to configure its Boeing 777-200LRMF (Long-Range Mammoth Freighter) for Qatar Airways, creating more commonality with production line 200Fs, meaning DHL Air (UK) overtook Qatar Airways to take delivery of the first aircraft.
In May 2025, Qatar Airways Cargo announced it would be a launch customer for the 777-200LRMF, with a commitment to take five of the type through Texas-based aircraft trading and leasing company Jetran.
In total, Jetran has more than two dozen 777-200LRMFs on order, 13 of which are destined to be operated by DHL.
At the Farnborough Airshow in July the 777-200LRMF made its public debut in DHL colors, and Jetran took delivery of MSN 32222 (registered N703DN) destined for DHL UK on Aug. 21.
When asked about the delivery sequencing, a Mammoth spokesperson said 10 former Delta Air Lines 777-200LRs were used as feedstock for the conversions, and timings originally lined up for Jetran to allocate the first two 777-200LRMFs (N705DN and N710DN) to Qatar Airways.
“Qatar’s first aircraft [N705DN] was ready for flight weeks ago, but Qatar representatives decided to add a number of additional work requests and elective work to the original scope,” the Mammoth Freighters spokesperson said. “This effort will bring these assets even closer to a true commonality with the 200F.”
The changes included service bulletins, safety equipment, “beautifying the lower holds,” new cargo handling system configurations and ULD positioning, the spokesperson said.
Qatar Airways did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Based on a 2023 press release, DHL was originally anticipating its first Mammoth-converted 777-200LR in 2024, with the remaining aircraft arriving by early 2027. However, Mammoth did not secure FAA supplemental type certification (STC) for the 777-200LRMF until April 2026.
“Every STC development in recent years has experienced delays,” the Mammoth spokesperson said. “From OEMs to independent aftermarket converters, we have all experienced much higher regulatory standards and ‘pushups.’ The bar has been raised, regardless of the high degree of safety and track record that the conversion industry has achieved.”
UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) supplemental type certification validation for the 777-200LRMF is underway, ahead of its entry into service with DHL Air UK. Mammoth said the process will conclude either with a UK CAA exemption to operate or completed validation, at the CAA’s discretion. DHL is slated to receive four of its 13 777-200LRMFs this year.
“The Qatar and DHL jets have all converged on the finish line with four aircraft completed or near completion and delivery,” the spokesperson said. “We should have several freighters in service by year-end.”
