LE BOURGET—Frontier Airlines has selected Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engines to power 91 Airbus A321neo aircraft, in a follow-on order that brings the carrier's total commitment up to 235 GTF-powered aircraft, including those already delivered.
Pratt parent company RTX announced the order during the Paris Air Show.
The first of the 91 aircraft is set to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2026, RTX said. Pratt will also provide engine maintenance through a long-term EngineWise comprehensive service agreement.
Rick Deurloo, president of commercial engines at Pratt & Whitney, said that four years after Frontier joined the GTF family, the latest order “demonstrates the airline’s confidence in the GTF engine.”
RTX added: “The next evolution of the GTF engine, the GTF Advantage, provides higher takeoff thrust capability, better fuel efficiency and longer time on wing. The GTF Advantage will power Frontier Airlines’ A321neo aircraft deliveries as the engine becomes the production standard over the next few years.”
Pratt’s GTF engine program has faced significant difficulties in recent years, because of manufacturing issues which led to aircraft groundings, causing problems and schedule changes for airlines whose aircraft were equipped with them.
But in an interview with Aviation Week ahead of the Paris Air Show, Pratt President Shane Eddy said aircraft-on-ground levels had stabilized and would start to trend down in the second half of the year.
