Airbus is temporarily slowing down the build rate of its A380s to reduce the number of aircraft that will need to be modified to resolve fatigue cracking in a wing component. The decision will reduce monthly production from 2.7 aircraft to 2.3 aircraft, although Airbus says this will not affect its 2012 delivery target of 30 aircraft. It will, however, result in lower-than-anticipated deliveries in 2013. Airbus is taking a €158 million charge linked to the costs associated with A380 wing component cracking with more costs excepted to follow.

For years, Pratt & Whitney Automation has been using its patented waterjet technology to remove coatings for commercial, military and space customers. Now, it has perfected that process to remove many more types of coatings, including high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coatings. Pratt & Whitney refers to this alternative waterjet technology as Pure Pulse, as it uses ultrasonically pulsed water to remove the coatings rather than harsh chemicals.

Consider these two real situations: • Two technicians were discussing last night's hockey game while a third wrestled to maneuver a piece of heavy equipment. Although within 10 ft. of each other, the talking pair never volunteered to help and the technician handling the load never asked for it. • When a large MRO switched its safety reporting initiative from a phone-based system to an Internet-based system, input from technicians skyrocketed from six calls in eight years to more than 800 reports in the first year alone.
