Yesterday, I placed 16 things on my to-do list. At the end of the day, 10 were done and I wished I had more time (and energy!). How often do you hear someone say, “I wish I had more hours in a day!”? In the MRO industry, time dictates many activities—from life-limited parts to cycle times to contractual turnaround times. Airlines and MROs gain efficiencies and save money by extending time on wing or slashing turnaround times. Operators strive for optimal asset utilization.

Airbus is temporarily slowing down the build rate of its A380s to reduce the number of aircraft that will need to be modified to resolve fatigue cracking in a wing component. The decision will reduce monthly production from 2.7 aircraft to 2.3 aircraft, although Airbus says this will not affect its 2012 delivery target of 30 aircraft. It will, however, result in lower-than-anticipated deliveries in 2013. Airbus is taking a €158 million charge linked to the costs associated with A380 wing component cracking with more costs excepted to follow.
