From The Archives: Mockup Of NASA/Hughes Orbiting Solar Observatory
National Aeronautics & Space Administration/Hughes Orbiting Solar Observatory, shown in mockup, was scheduled for launch in November 1971, to study the Sun's chromosphere and corona.
The surface activity on the Sun at that time would have been relatively calm. The spacecraft was the largest solar observatory launched back then, and weighed about 1,950 lb.
