From The Archives: Mars Close Up

A crater photographed by the Mars Orbiter Camera on the Mars Global Surveyor was seen on the northern Elysium Planitia (see page 52) on Mars on the cover of the July 19, 1999, issue. 

The crater is a little more than the diameter of the Meteor Crater in Arizona. The image shows detail in the raised ejecta blanket surrounding the crater and layering within the crater wall.
