From The Archives: Kiwi Tests Yields Nuclear Rocket Data

The cover of the June 6, 1960, issue shows the Kiwi-A nonflying test reactor for the Project Rover nuclear rocket program is photographed during full-power operation. 

The photo is an enlargement made from a motion picture film taken about 500 yd. from the test cell. 

The hydrogen exhaust flame extends well beyond the luminous central column, as indicated by the blurred mountain background.
