From The Archives: Hubble Space Telescope - Unlocking The Secrets Of The Universe
The cover of the March 26, 1990 issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology, is a painting of the 13-ton NASA Hubble Space Telescope.
NASA's space shuttle Discovery, in this painting, depicts the $2 billion observatory's deployment at 330 nautical mile altitude. Hubble's large aft shroud area is pointed toward the Sun to enable the telescope's sensors to lock onto the Sun for initial spacecraft stabilization. Hubbe's solar arrays are 40 ft. long and give the 42.5-ft. telescope a "wingspan" of 45 ft.
