From The Archives: Historic Images Of Hubble's Deployment
The 13-ton NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center Hubble Space Telescope is held above the orbiter Discovery by the shuttle manipulator arm as Hubble's first 40-ft. solar array is deployed 331 naut. mi. above Earth.
This image was taken through Discovery's starboard overhead window as the aperture door end of the Lockheed/Perkin Elmer-built spacecraft was pointed at Discovery's tail.
A solar array boom extends 15 ft. from the side of the observatory and solar arrays built by the European Space Agency have been reeled out 20 ft. on either side of the cassette. Both of Hubble's high-gain antennas are visible as are the yellow EVA handholds and silver magnetic torquer bars at center.
