The European Space Agency's (ESA) 3.4-metric-ton Infrared Space Observatory underwent checkout prior to an Ariane launch which was set for Nov. 10.

The infrared telescope and instruments are cooled by 2,140 liters of liquid helium at -270C.

The feature on page 48 reported how ESA's mission cost $666 million and was expected to reveal a “hidden universe” visible only in infrared light.
