From The Archives: Astronauts, Rover Reap Geologic Harvest
This eight-page feature of images, including double-page spreads of the Apollo 15 lunar mission, is part of the Special Report: Communications Satellites feature package in the issue dated August 23, 1971, on page 53.
The first image shows Apollo 15 astronaut David R. Scott placing to one side the power head of a drill, which he had used to bore into the lunar surface to implant a heat flow experiment to take the Moon's temperature.
In the foreground of the photo are solar wind experiments and power cables for other surface experiments. We reported that drilling was the most difficult chore the crew encountered during their 67-hr. stay on the Moon.
