Gallery: Inside MTU Maintenance Fort Worth’s Expanded Shop

MTU Maintenance celebrated the grand opening of its engine MRO in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 8. Gernot Sell, general manager, addresses the crowd gathered to celebrate the completion of the facility’s modernization.

Sell held various operational positions in quality control, engineering and value stream management at MTU before starting this role in 2025.

MTU Maintenance Fort Worth inducted its first engine, a CFM International CFM Leap-1B from Gol Linhas Aereas, on the same day.

MTU Maintenance moved into this 43,000 m² facility at Fort Worth Alliance Airport in 2023 and invested $120 to modernize it. The facility started by providing engine hospital shop visits and quick-turn services for a variety of GE and CFM narrowbody and widebody engines, but the newest capabilities allow it to overhaul CFM Leap-1A and -1B powerplants. It plans to add GE90 overhaul capability by 2023.

MTU Maintenance’s facility in Texas includes a training academy that offers a 14-week program that includes practical and theoretical training. The engine shop employs 200 people but plans to ramp up to 1,200 by 2032, when it intends to be running the shop at full capacity.

Johannes Bussmann, MTU Aero Engines CEO, said “The site will be a cornerstone of our strategy to support next-generation engine programs at scale” during the July 8 opening ceremony.
