Gulfstream retained its one-year lead in the emerging ultra-long-haul business jet market with the first flight of its G5. The jet would carry eight passengers, baggage and a crew of four at 6,500 nm. The aircraft was 14,400 lb. heavier and flies 6,000 ft. higher than its predecessor, the G4SP.
We reported that the business jet was ramping up its test program to obtain FAA certification in October 1996 and comparable European authorization by year-end.
It featured new engines and a wing, and the test program would employ 110 full-time workers, including technicians and engineers, support personnel and six pilots.
