Gallery: Special Olympics Airlift 2026 Wraps Up

During the Special Olympics Airlift, aircraft taking part in the event are known as Doves, the symbol of peace. They are given a special call sign and National Airspace priority by the FAA while they take part in the airlift.

Here, a volunteer leads the way for those flying on "Dove 102" to head to the aircraft.

Dove 1 led the departures on June 27 in a coordinated effort in the ninth airlift led by Cessna and Beechcraft, and organized by Textron Aviation, since its inception in 1987.

The event is one of the largest peacetime airlifts in more than 40 years. Here a Cessna Citation X takes part in it. 

Athletes and coaches prepare to depart following the Games, held at the University of Minnesota. 

“Departure day is always meaningful,” said Ron Draper, Textron Aviation president and CEO. “It reflects the achievements of the athletes and the collective effort of an aviation community committed to supporting then from takeoff to homecoming.”
