Tenerife is aiming to become an international hub with routes to West Africa, and South America. The tourist destination already has one route to Caracas, Venezuela, but is aiming to add routes to Argentina and Uruguay, Carlos Enrique Alonso Rodríguez, tourism minister for Tenerife, told a ‘Routes Talks Tourism’ seminar at World Routes, in Abu Dhabi, on Monday.
Tenerife is the leading tourist destination within the EU with more than 6.5 million passengers per year. The destination has a 37 per cent market share within the Canary Islands, Rodríguez said. He added that that 80 per cent of visitors choose Tenerife because of its year-round mild climate.
The 2,034 sq km site also boasts two UNESCO world heritage sites. The island has 134,186 hotel beds and holiday goers stay in Tenerife for an average of nine days.
The island has two gateways – Los Rodeos Airport in the north and Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport in the south – which together handled 12.6 million passengers last year. The airports handled 4.3 million travellers in the first quarter of 2012. Tenerife is currently connected to more than 140 airports, mainly within Europe, Rodríguez told delegates.
